The engine oil viscosity will vary depending on the temperature the vehicle is going to be operated in- the details are in the owner's manual.

Yes, this is true for engine oil, but what about front and rear diff? I put in front diff 85W-140 into it, because of heat from machine, but in owner's manual is specified 85W-90.

My guess is the front and rear diff aren't so critical due to them not generating their own heat like an engine and not suffering the cooling issues that an engine can?

i use a 20w60 weight Penrite oil in the engine (HPR30) and Valvoline dura gear synthetic 75w90 (by memory) in the gearbox and transfer and Valvoline 80w90 in both the front and rear diffs.

gotta remember with the owners manual and oil specs, they quote what oil to run in a 'new' engine, not one thats done 100 odd thousand k's. sure if you engine still in tip top condition you can still run a thinner oil (which is better for fuel economy too) but in my case where it burns a little, thicker oil is the go.
