hey

i have be told if you put a coil on the a frame on the rear of the rangies it gives more stability off road and articulation. seen some comp trucks with it and want to know is it worth the effort and does it work. if so how

i have a 93 model so it never had one... land rover stopped fitting them

i dont know any one who has one.. as far as i know its only good for carrying heavy loads...... i think

has advantages.

RR had a bouge unit fitted and soft springs. the bouge pumped up and supported aprox 1/3 of the vehicle rear weight.

hence when remove bouge heavier springs need to be fited.


fitting a coil spring has similar properties and DOES work as does fitting an AIR BAG. these 2 options will allow softer springs again to be fitted.

I believe the screw in spring seats from a cortina has the same thread as the bouge unit did.

I had one....well up to last month when I cut it off and suddenly found I could get real articulation.

But you are talking about a coil not the boge strut. I have heard of a couple of people, including comp drivers, install a spring (commodore I think) in place of the boge strut. It does a simialar job to the strut but has a lot more movement.

I am not sure of the mechanics of it but I have been told the spring is actually better than no spring because it creates a type of active suspension, helping the torce the wheel which is lifting back to the ground.

mine still has it and it articulates quite well. just wondering has anyone on here done it. mick (hsv) has a point with the springs thou and i have been told that a coil helps your diff pivot better. would still like to know more thou

If it is the original unit it will be knackered by now and are $$$ to replace, if your springs have been upgraded and lifted then pull it out and forget about it. When working and soft springs fitted they were supposed to of worked well -22 years later, crap.

I took mine out, mainly because it wasn't working and couldn't be stuffed replacing it.

220lb springs work well in place of the strut, 270's if you tow or cary a shitload of gear.

The reason people fit a coil spring instead of the boge unit is that they usually don't want to spend the $$$ (400-500) to recondition the boge unit. As Michael said, either a boge unit or a coil (or airbag) will let you run softer springs on the outside, giving a smoother ride and more articulation.

If you never carry heavy loads and mainly use the vehicle offroad, you can remove the boge unit (and retain the soft springs) to get better wheel travel (the boge unit does limit travel somewhat - but not as much as stiff springs would). But if you want to carry heavy loads it is better to keep the boge unit or swap if for a coil/air bag.

Page 64 of this manual has a sketch of the Boge Hydromat unit (heading is "levelling device".

had a read... very interesting, checked out mine it looks old so im assuming its the original which means that 25 years on its most likely stuffed.

in my rear suspension set up i have 40mm lifted king springs with poly air bags in them.

not quite sure what the spring rate of them is but they feel fairly stiff and the fact that they have air bags in them means i can bring the car back to correct ride level by pumping them up when i have a heavy load, so the boge unit is effectively useless. i could piss it off and have a little more wheel travel....yes?
