The correct term is "bollocks" - a pommy slang for "balls". I think they're also called "Johnny" joints and/or "Heim" joints?
Although bullocks do have pretty big balls.

50x25MS tube, nissan patrol bushes and the rings machined up from 3rds. For the top I use a Rangie A-frame and ball joint.

I've seen hex bar used on a few rigs. Any specific advantages/disadvantages of using this stuff?

It's different from the norm and I guess there are arguements about more sides to stretch to bend it. I'm running it and have bent the tie rod already, but I had plenty of traction and was jamming it into a rock pretty hard, I think that was when the output shaft gave up the ghost.
For a daily driver or trail rig I'd just use 8-10mm wall mild steel or bright mild steel with either patrol bushes or bollocks type joints. That way you won't have the harshness of heims and they'll probably last a while longer.
