Outer Limits 4x4 Board

It looks like I will be moving to Tasmania for a while. Does anyone know where I can find info on legal modifications there? I have looked on the Transport Tas website but it wasn't much help.

I currently have Qld rego and I know they are pretty tight-arsed when it comes to mods. Is Tas much better, and what happens if I modify and then move back to Qld?

Tas has adopted the national code for vehicle modification, and are allegedly enforcing it strictly down here. So, the same laws should apply as in Qld. Most 4wd mods down here are 'illegal', eg., tyres too side, suspesions lift too high and so on. Sometimes hear of vehicles being checked and challenged, but not too many, and usually only if the driver is attracting attention. The Transport web site has more info. Have heard that QLD was more liberal in the past on mods, but seems not to be the case now.

I've also heard that Tas was enforcing the NCOP down there.


If you had a fully qld legal rig you'd be close to ok - there is a slight gap between the current qld regs and the NCOP where the 15 mm + 2" suspension lift under NCOP pushes you into a category requiring engineers reports, such as swerve tests.

However, on the whole NCOP shouldnt cause you any dramas if you already had certification for your mods, or your mods were mild enough to not need certification in the first place.


There was a contact email in the NCOP documents for every state - I'd suggest you email that person and wait in vain for a response like i did.

The guy in charge of vehicle mods at the transport here in tassie told me the other day that there is now a national code for vehicle mods applicable in all states. He also said that they would honor all modded vehicles with the correct mod plates and engineers reports even though they now fall outside the national guidelines. He said that if I were to buy a vehicle from interstate allready modded and engineered all I would need to do to transfer to tassie reg is to get a roadworthy and pay normal transfer fee's.
Gotta make engineered vehicles that fall outside the new guidelines worth a bit more doesn't it.

Thats a sweet deal - I doubt other states will be so generous, although I believe there was a clause honouring pre-existing engineering certs I didnt see where it stated that it had to include interstate vehicles.


Maybe we can keep our eyes open when we're at the wreckers for any engineer plated bodies

Bugger - doesnt looks like any advantages mod wise. I have seen heaps of massive fourbies down here, so was hoping to be able to go nuts on mine legally! My Zook is only lifted 50mm so no worries there. The tires are a little too wide, but not enough to attract attention. Have been meaning to stop in at Bunnings for some garden edging anyway.

I might as well keep the Sunshine State plates, wearing a maroon gurnsey, eating mangoes and hitting cane toads with a nine iron.

yeh, should have added that engineered vehicles from other states are accepted without question here. Did that for the 40 which was modded in QLD, and which would now not pass the Code.
