GU turbo leaking oil

Just spotted a few oil patches on driveway.

Had a look under, I think the oring/seal on the oilfilter is gone or isnt done up tight enough, but while checking this i noticed a fair amount of oil around where my engine inlet plumbing connects to outlet of turbo.

Now, i dont have a turbo time (shoot me down). Looks like im up for a rebuild maybe new turbo. Depending on how bad it is. Hoping its just seals or something and not worn propllor/shaft etc...!

Any ideas.

Im not too worried at this stage. I know there is a problem, but i have my major 120k service coming up soon, and worrying isnt gonna fix the problem, only make it seem worse.. ive degreased it all to see if i can pinpoint it a bit better in the (i hope not so) near future...

Hi,
They all have a bit of oil in the hose there. Don't worry about it. It is likely to come from the PCV system rather than the turbo.

PCV system?

Positive Crankcase Ventilation System. There is a hose between the PCV valve on the rocker cover and the air inlet hose. Some oil always seems to find it's way through there and also ends up in the intercooler. They all do that, even the 2.8 I had before always had a bit of oil in the intercooler.
If your turbo seal was leaking, you would soon know about it. There would be lots of blue smoke out the back.

funny you should say that. I checked smoke yesterday, (couldnt check while driving) but upon start up there is a puff of white/bluey smoke...

Hi.. I think you worry too much.
That puff of smoke is probably normal too.
When I said you will really know about it when that bearing goes, I meant it. It will be a cloud, not a puff!

Degreased it and will monitor it over the next 1000 kays or so. Might also have it checked on the next service. Cant hurt ;)

Hi....
Yes, get it checked out by all means. I just had a look at mine, it is a Feb 2001 and has done just over 60,000. There is also a bit of oil seeping out of that spot. I am quite paranoid too about things with the car or truck. Came from years of driving old bombs in my younger days. You get to know the sounds bits make when they are about to fall apart........

Cheers

just on the oil filter thing leak ( which may lead to the other prob) . The hose on the small tray under the oil filter housing, used to catch and drain away oil when changing filter, can get blocked quite easy and give the impression of something leaking. get under the car and poke something back up the hose to unblock then flush from top. Creates all hell when it overflows.

is this the rubber hose that hangs down just behind the alternator...

thanks i will try that...

But arent mechanics supposed (and usually do) clean/flush away any spilt oil/residing oil in the tray after the oil filter change?

Mate, Your engine should not be leaking any oil from anywhere with those low kays on it. My 03 3 litre has over 200ks and has not leaked a drop from anywhere, nor are there any signs of oil on the engine.
