Dead Maxi drive

Post by cloughy »

Has anyone killed there Maxi drive locker? i just pulled one down and found the fork had snapped of the actuator! and ran amock and punched though the diff pumpkin, also which i think may be unrelated the driver side axle outer spline is twisted, ready to snap, just like the standard axles do!, the locker is pretty old and had a hard life but was wondering if anyone else has had this sort of damage before??

Also anyone bought a replacement fork and/or driver side rear axle and what sort of price?? will call maxi drive tomorrow but just curious to what others have paid??

I bought my maxidrive 2nd hand as a complet diff disc to disc. When I was installing it I noticed the end of drivers side axel was twisted slightly at the splines. I have kept an eye on it and it does not seem to be getting any worse.
Thanks,

Adam

I actuate my MD locker using compressed air. When I bought it, Mal told me that anything higher than 20psi will bend/break the fork.

If it is a very early model, then it may have EN25 axles, which are a lot weaker than the hytuff which is used now.

All parts should still be available.

That be a version 1 or a version 2?

(V2 comes with flanges which have 'MD' stamped into them, as well as the internals of the locker are further upgraded to something that i forget)

I killed my rear V1 in Feb 04. 200tdi pushing 35" Muds in sand. (I can do anything)

Snapped the actuator toungue, stripped the crown wheel and pinion, snapped the long maxi axle and made a few holes in the rear crown wheel housing. Fun!

Spent the dosh, bought a complete new V2 maxi locker + axles + flanges + crownwheel/pinion.

Possibly should have went GU axles + airlocker...

All V2 parts are available.

No Version 1 parts are available off the shelf / from factory.

Ebay perhaps...

For sale: 2x Version 1 flanges (28 spline).

When I asked Mal a couple of years ago he said that all parts were still available. But things could have changed. He also said there were about 3 things that changed - 28 to 24 spline, diff bearing on side with actuator, and actuator design (some of these might be front only). These didn't all change at the same time, so AFAIK there was a transition between the old and the new designs.

Just spoke to mal and the actuator fork breaking he said was the earlier ones they had cast were hardened to much and wer brittle, but its atleast 15 years, and the axle twist is just due to fatique and abuse and is close to breaking its almost done 2 splines worth of rotation, So just bought a new axle and end cap and to front axles for my gayrover and he threw the fork in free.

Soory posted this earlier on Aulro forgot to post here

I'm aware of most changes made as i have 3 Maxi-drives all up now and one ARB, 2 being early tyre and 1 the later
