Hello.. i am new to this scene..
there is a 84 jeep cherokee, 10th year anniversary edition for sale near where i live..
It has a small bit of rust.. not too bad.. has no engine.. has a new radiator and has a auto gearbox..
The guy wants $1500 for it.. Seems a little steep... but my god does it look tough... and with a bitta lift and big tyes.. it sure could be worth it..
I was just wondering.. does anyone else have one of these trucks..
Are the capable off road.. how much is an engine.. and can i have some pics of any? i cant seem to find any info on them anywhere.....
Thanx all for your time.

I'm assuming you mean the fullsize cherokee like this. This one has an early model grill though.
Plenty of them around and almost any motor would fit, a 360 would be nice or a big turbo diesel.
Do a google on 'cherokee fullsize' or Wagoneer to find some pics etc.
Cheers

84 would be a FSJ.
If it is a 2 door like the pic Steve put up and the rust is an easy repair then it would be a good buy
a 4 door version then it would all depend on condition of the rest of the parts
engine wise they came with with a 258 inline 6 or a 360 V8 normally a 727 auto but sometimes a t5 manual behind the 6 the T5 doesnt have a very good repuation in Jeeps and while it shares the same name as the T5 seen in commodores etc it is not the same box Jeep used a standard T5 while T5's in Australia are mostly world class T5's with beefed up gears etc

ok i just went and had anotther look at the jeep..
seems to be a bit of rust around the roof...and a litle around the base of the windscreen.. looks a bit rough.. there is surface rust on the bonnet and on some of the doors... seems to have a dual fuel set up.. has 2 new tyres.. 31".
ill upload a pic later on tonight of it.. there a little bit of rust on the passender quarter panel. and around the rear wheel archs..
Over all its pretty rough... shame it doesnt have an engine..
I think i might keep on looking for 1 in a bit better condition.
Cheers all

ok i smsd him
and asked for $500, he said hed take 950 for it, then went on to say that gb is worth 400, transfer case 400, and radiator 600... or he said that he would put a fukd motor in it( need new rings at least(i dont know what that means as im new)) for $1500..
meh.. dunno what to do:P need advice....

Guessing it's a TF727 Tranny, Last one I saw on ebay sold for about $250.
If the T/case is a quaddy - he'd be dreaming to get $400 for it.
Mind you the diffs would be worth a bit...... Heck if you did go ahead at least you've knocked $550 off the price strat away
Fitting a motor - even a Fkd one is still a lot of work for bugger all return and even with a motor, if it's not running & has no rego IMHO $1500 would be the top dollar he'd likely get.
Anyhow that's just my spin on it - others mights disagree.....

you can not expect much for $1500 but having said that there is a number of $1500 FSJ around just takes a little looking and paitence.
they are not particulary collectable or anything so even a good buy and drive with nothing needing urgent repair is on going to be round 5k at best I have seen some advertise higher but not sure what they finally sold for
personaly i wouldnt pay more than about 4k for a 4 door and maybe upto 7 for a absolute mint condition 2 door but it would have to be very good
I am a self confess Jeep nut but have a view that most are over priced so the figures i quote are probally less than what others would pay but each to their own
depending on which engine he is going to chuck in it then a full rebuild is going to cost somewhere around 3 or 4 K for modderate performance mods you can go all out like any engine just add $$ per HP if you can do the work yourself you can save some $$
you can buy a 360 for anywhere in the range of $300 to $1500 depending on conditon and about 5K can buy you a brand new create engine
I hope this helps you make up your mind but if it was me then I would prob pass but I hate rust it scares me as to what else you will find once your start

Sorry this is a bit late guys, I bought a 1983 Cherokee last year for $6500. It's got a bit of rust in but dosn't realy show yet. Mechanically it's in excellent condition, I currently have 31" tyres on it, and it needs a bit of a lift. But both my wife and i love driving it, it's not our family car so the rust isnt an issue. it's one of the best toys i've bought yet. $6500 seems abit much, but he was asking $10,000 about two months before i got it. highly recomend one of these to anyone who's thinking about it. well worth the $6500 i paid.

IMO i realise there is something special and cool in character (and size) of these old skool cheros, but for anything over 7K, i would be looking for an XJ (unless it is in showroom condition with original moderate kms owned by a lady thats never seen more than the dirt in her driveway or front lawn).

What diffs are in the 84 model 4 doors , with a 360 , 727 engine combo ?? are they strong or are they bread sticks , also are parts and panels expensive and hard to come buy ?? i also reckon that they look great.

dana 44 front and either a HD amc 20 or d 44 rear amc20 has bigger R&P than a D44 but normally has light tubes that twist and 2 peice axles that spin in the keyway how ever the HD version get heavier wall tubes and 1 peice axle sets making them a pretty good axle better than a D44 but no where near a D60
the running gear for a FSJ is typically very soild the quadratrac takes some dislipined maintence routine but if this has been done sould be good
pannels in the US there is a number of after market options here in Aus there is a few wrecks around but the pannels are pretty simple shapes and if needed any pannel beater worth his trade ticket could do a good job on repairing them
