Hey all,
My lux 89 ln106 2.8 turbo, has got quite a loud knock/rattle when you rev it at 2600-2800, its done 275,000k's and has had no rebuild from new. Anyone know what this could be? Is it an indication the thing is going to SHIT itself soon? Its done it for about a year but seems to be getting louder.. What should I do????
A) Get a rebuild before it shits itself completly?
B) Just sell it and buy another one
C) just forget about it n turn the stezze up?

I know nothing about hilux. Is it a diesel? If so it is probably your injectors.

It’s often better dealing with what you have got – at least you know all of the issues and there are no “surprises” unlike if you get another one. You may be up for the same thing or worse not too far down the track if you buy another shitter. If you rebuild this one, you know the motor will be good. As long as the rest of the bus is ok or better, you will at least have piece of mind…

rather than throwing big bucks at it straight up why dont you take it to a good mechanic to get it diagnosed and take it from there.
if i replaced my engine every time i heard a loud noise id have to rob banks.
275k isnt heaps of ks for it if its been looked after.
regards,
nathan

Yeah true, its impossible to make an intelligent decision about this when you dont know whats wrong with it. It could be something simple and you'd kick yourself when you find out what it is as you're pulling the engine out. Get a diagnosis and update this thread so someone can offer you some useful advice.

2.8`s are bad for only getting 200,000ks out of them. But yes it could be your injectors, but if its been doing it for 12 months and was only injectors to start with chances are now a piston is unhealthy.

knock is also caused by pre ignition and other things
check timing and maybe wind some more fuel into it
but take it to a diesel mechanic, theyll tell you exactly whats wrong and give you a quote to fix it

you would shot yourself if you just got your motor rebuilt and to find out it was something else all together. advice from a diesel mechanic, get a good diesel mechanic to have a look at it.

I've had my diesel mechanic look at it n he said simple.. don't let it rev at 2600-2800 for long periods of time... hmmm not sure I think he could work out what it was. I'm a uni student with F*#k all money so cheapest and safest option is the best for me at the moment

WTF? go find a better diesel mechanic. Check the simple things first, if you still cant find whats wrong then it maybe be something internal in the engine, then you can start thinking about rebuilds etc... the 3L engine should go for well over 275 thou if looked after. Probably shouldnt of waited a year before you did something about it either.

well took it to a few places today and guess what it was NOTHING!!! just a the dust guard covering the uni joint on the front of the transfer case. purely harmonics, was rattling against the metal at that vibration. Took it off and WALAHH,
Now my lux has done 275,000k's its an 89 had 1 owner and been serviced EVERY 5000k's without fail, plus had the rear diff rebuilt in 2000, gearbox taken out cos the guy before towed his boat in 5th and farked it, alternator replaced, waterpump done, etc etc so I think i'm just gonna hold on2 it now n see how many k's I can get outta her

Okay, no more laughing.
When I was 17 I took my first car to a mechanic to complain about this terrible noise coming from somewhere under the car (I worked in a servo and therefore with the mechanic).
He took it for a quick spin, came back, and unbent the rear mudflap that had been bent up and was rubbing on the rear tyre.

Keep servicing every 5k & you'll be fine for a long time yet.
My '90 model 2.8 naturally athsmatic diesel has 468000 kms on it. Had the transfer rebuilt about 120000 ago. Injectors & pump done last year ( damn low sulpher diesel - hadn't been touched since new )
Keep up the regular service & it'll stay sweet.

Yer, thats a bunch of rocking horse shite, it should do 3800 happily when your changing gears or burning up a hill... 2600 - 2800 is the cruise range for these motors...
