Some late model Pajeros used a composite for the front tail shaft - and some have shattered when hit.

Perhaps you need to re-word your original question. This is Outer Limits afterall :D

What part of the car is the shaft for?
Most general industrial shafts are 4140

the guy i get to do my tailshafts says the material is not so special, not like 4140 or anything. it is the dimensions that are hard to come by. some people use pressure pipe and bore the ends to size. some even use hydraulic tube.

Supercars use 2 1/2" (64mm) X .095" or 3" (76mm) X .083" Chrome/Moly 4130 tubing.
