Reco engine
Reco engine
I just got a reco G16A installed in my vitara. If anyone else has had this done, how did you go about running it in? The mechanic says to vary the engine speed, dont' let it idle for long and don't be afraid to drop a gear going up hills, for 800 k's. Not that i dont believe him but was just wondering about other peoples experiences.

Same as i have been told.
Also been told but dont trust it:
Run your engine in as you want to drive it later. EG if u baby the motor for first few thousand it is a lasy(sp) motor. Thrash it and it will respond quicker and that.

dont baby it and dont let it idle for to long , drive it as per normal , if you abuse your engine normally start abusing it now . when we build diesel engines soon as there warm we load em up and give em all there got , better to go bang right there and than than down the hwy , we advise customers (mines and truck company's) to drive em as hard as they normaly would straight after a full rebuild .
and thats how i run in my petrol cars and bikes ive rebuilt

I agree with all the above but wish to add that the type of oil used in this running in process is pretty important. Just passing on what I have been told but it's not "normal" oil you are supposed to be using. I could be wrong.

It also depends a bit on how far the reco went. In general, avoid lugging the engine for that first 800kms. Dont abuse it, but do use the full rev range.
PS if you want to see the best explanation I have ever seen on how to run in an engine, drop into a BMW dealer and read the sticker on the top corner of the windscreen of a M3. This gives very specific instructions on how to drive the car for the first 2700km (!) to run in the engine.
Obviously this is a very special engine, but it is completely at odds with the nonsense that dealers tend to carry on about that "these days cars are run in at the factory and you don't need to" with 99% of cars sold now.
Steve.
