250rw/kw TD42

Hey guys, i'm getting a GU 4.2 turbo diesel ute around a 2000 model in the next month or so (hopefully no longer).
the question i put to u is that i want to make about 200rw/kw and hopefully about 600nm. then i was thinking that 250rw/kw would be awsum

, just want to know if this sort of power is possible from standard turbo and can this power be made and still be reliable power. By reliable i mean every day drive without working the engine so hard its only going to last only a few thousand.
i also dont have a budget but dont want to go over the top, just nice power. i know if i put in the money i could make one hell of a machine but just want something with a bit of bite
any thoughts appreciated

Put it this way. Kym Boltons competition GU puts out 219rw/Kw. To do this he has spent upwards of $20 000. I'm thinking you may have Kw mixed up with Hp. From a factory turbo I had around 160 rw/Hp. Hope this sets you on the right path. To do this I was running around 15psi and if I was to do that again I would put better piston rings in because I had heaps of problems with the crank case pressurising and blowing oil through the turbo.

With money anything is possible, give us a guide asto what you are willing to spend how much time and effort you want to sink into the project.
Id start looking at comp rigs and start looking for a engine builder.

ive heard a stock turbo running 176 kw at 540 nm with not so massive mods, you might think i'm full of myself thinking this figure is unrealistic but just makes me want to do it more-

it would be a long term project building it up as money comes in bit by bit until i get the power i want. Thanx mate aything is possible

I hope you prove us wrong. I doub't that you will or people like myself and all the other competitors that have already gone down this road would be running a similar setup to what you are describing. If you don't like what people are trying to tell you then don't ask the question. A factory turbo will not flow enough air to produce anywhere near as much power as you are looking for. It is simple maths. Like it or lump it.

you really do need to establish a budget, a long term engine build indicates you want the car off the road for large periods of time.
you will be looking at Turbo's, new zaust system, highflow fuel system. then the flow on effect, driveline stress.

As toughnut says, plenty of people have tried... but KW costs money..
look at Frigga's TB42 with 200+kw.. lots spent..

your best off talking to guys from denco or AXT tell them what you want (and us) and they will tell you cost's which will be substansial

i've looked into this quite a bit of detail and before you you even look into the engine modifications which are costly you have to consider the pump and the turbo setup.
factory turbo doesnt fow enough air for the required for the amount of power you require at best you may be able to high flow the turbo and with 4" snorkle and a decent intercooler and the right pump look at about 150kw but the turbo wont last. (been done before)
Next step is roller bearing turbo and this is where i ask you why 200rkw +++ beause all the trucks that have this power have nothing down low its all in a straight line before you get a head of yourself wanting 250 or 200 kw why not drive something thats properly setup with around 150kw+ you maybe surprised.
Other thing i said to consider would be strip or motor blue print balance and other parts about $10k
Turbo + intercooler setup and other head galler work $5k
pump work & injectors +3k

If you want power. Look at importing an 06 model Chev Duramax 6600 engine.
For 06 the Duramax has been upgraded and pumps out 268 Kw and 881 Nm of torque. These motors are awesome, but pretty heavy.
Quite a few people put the 6.2 and 6.5 V8 Chev diesels in, but personally i wonder why not spend the extra and get heaps more grunt and latest diesel technology.

I have no idea. I was on my way back to Townsville and was getting updates from some of the guys still down there. I'm sure it'll come out in the wash up. It may have even been another victim of the water.

Ok,
The bearings and seals in the turbo failed, spewing oil into the intercooler and motor.
I managed to shut it down hopefully before the motor hydraulic on the oil. This is all i know so far i will pull the intercooler and turbo off tomorrow some time and let you know what i found.

May be possible to get 176 with factory turbo, but you would have to overfuel the shit out of it, this causing extreme amounts of black smoke and much shorter enginie life. Go a bigger turbo alot better in the long run.

Also with it working so hard, the EGT would be sky high.
Drove a GU ute the other day with roller turbo, big front mount cooler and pump mods. It spews out a big cloud on take off. But the egt very rarely got over 400 when getting up it(actually the highest figure I ever seen was alot lower than that). This was lightly loaded and on the flat (well close to). So would be go to see it under load. And see if they increase.

My truck didn't get over 500 on the pyro at any stage during OBC, except when I was heading back out to Denian after getting the windscreen replaced. Thats why I had to pull out as the pyro climbed to about 600 just cruising on the highway. I run a Garret ball bearing turbo with front mount intercooler.

from wht ive heard the standard turbo cannot handel the sort of power i want so the oprion is upgrading the turbo, maby even making a twin turbo with smaller turbos, can any one sugest a good turbo for a single turbo set-up, heard that garret turbo GT30 i think i was told would be a sutable turbo.

Surely some good old Aussie enginuity would allow one to be grafted in. If i was lucky enough to stumble across a Duramax engine looking for a new home, i would move heaven and earth to get it in.
