Hiace/Hilux Motors

Hi Guys, Just a curious question from someone not too bright in this field. I have my eye on a Hilux from the early '80's that is a little run down that I'm considering doing up. It's been sitting in an industrial yard for quite some time and I haven't had a real close look at it so I'm not sure if it is petrol or diesel. I'd prefer a diesel and know where I can lay my hands on diesel out of a Hiace van from the same era. I was wondering if I rebuilt the Hiace Motor, would it fit into the Hilux relatively easy? Or do Hiace and Hilux have different engine mounts and bell housings etc? Would there be any diference between a petrol and diesel engine mounts and Bell houseing?
Still have to find the finances to fund this project but would appreciate any advice to decide which way to go while I find them.

manifolds and belt/accesory layout is likely to be different between van and uts models, and there may be incompatabilities.
you'll need more info on what motor is in both before people will be able to give definitive answers as to what can be swapped. as a rough rule of thumb, the R family petrol motors can be swapped easily with L series diesels, but I'm not sure how you go trying to swap between the diesels and the Y series petrols.
go get a look at that hilux and get some info! could have a real fun project! (or a real disaster *grins* )
cheers

Thanks for that Brian, much appreciated
Basically I guess Just wanted to know if they used the same motors in Hilux's and Hiaces, But you've given me the info I need so that when I do get myself going, I have more of an idea of what to look for. I won't look quite as big a dill when I go look at the Hilux.
Just getting the funds together to start negotiating with before I get too serious about what sort of project I take on. As I don't have the room for any major operation at present, I don't want to be stuck with something I can't finish.
If the hilux I'm thinking of is gone by the time I can afford to do things, I'll either be looking for another one or something else all together.
in the mean time, I'll ask the occassional dumb question to gather as much info I can to help persuade which way I'll go when I can afford a project.
Thanks again.
Ted
