Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I want to mount a 9000 or 12000 lb winch on to my tamden trailer for pulling pallets to the back so fork lifts can take them off. each pallet will weigh about 500-700kg and will be dragged along the tread plate floor.
I need to connect to the second battery via a 200amp Anderson plug at the tow bar on the patrol, what size cable should i run back to the battery and do i run both pos and neg cable or just run pos and earth to chassis?

Cable size needs to be the same as from winch solinoid box to motor... 2Guage I think. You can get this from some auto electricians or from your local welding shop. You may have to get orange instead of red.

And connecting both + & - back to the battery is far better than a chasis earth. This is what Warn recomend.

It may be cheaper to mount a battery on the trailer, then run a smaller guage (8 B&S) back to your vehicle charging system as described here http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/dual_bat.htm

The battery in the trailer has merrit but more to combat voltage drop than cost.

Running a winch from a trailer to your main battery/s you'll be wanting at least 0B&S cable or larger on a run that long otherwise you'll have way too much voltage loss under load and would likely either stall the winch motor and/or burn it out.

OK I didn't spell it out, but replacing winch motors will add up over time...
But the cable costs would be exxy too 15m to 20m(+ & -) of 0Ga cable at about $12/meter is $$ouch.

Yep, not cheap but 1 winch motor will cost double the cable $$$.

Otherwise, a decent battery is gunna cost $120 up plus 6B&S cable aswell.

Either way, not a cheap project.


BTW, I believe BOC sell welding cable, same size as 0B&S for about $8 a meter, more flexible, possibly suited better to using with a trailer.
