yeah right .....

Dont like the new ARB ones. The wheel carrier wobbles all over the place.
Opposite Lock has one as does Allterrain 4x4 in Moroabbin.

But IMO the Kaymar is still the best.

PS. Cheezy does a nice 80 series one, maybe he has some GU ones comming....?

have heard from a reputable 4wd service source that ARB ones have so many bolts that they 1.. are a biatch to fit 2.. fall to bits with outback travel. Personally have Kaymar, but would also look at other fully welded ones,friend has OL one with twin carriers - no probs.

This is true, they do take a while to fit, but whats a little bit of your extra time to fit it when it will last the time you keep the car for?

ARB one is cheaper than Kaymar and in most peoples opinion looks better - no accounting for taste though

You're right - I cant take a shot and lie down.

I've had a Kaymar bar on the last GU, and now an ARB bar on the new GU (at last something I can comment on...)

It's true that the ARB bar takes a full day to fit, while the Kaymar bar just about bolts straight up in one piece.
It takes even longer when ARB supply the wrong side braces – but that’s another story.
But unless you are fitting the bar more than once – fitment time is not really an issue.

The Kaymar bars do bend if you hit them hard enough - and then need to be completely removed to fix up (however Kaymar looked after me very well).
Likewise the ARB bar bends (large rock in river) - but the side panels can be removed (if I could be bothered – black hides a lot).
Side panels are more rigid on the Kaymar due to the welded construction, but overall I would say they are fairly similar strength wise.
The amount of rubber and plastic inserts on the ARB bar do leave a question about long term durability however.
The closing mechanism on the ARB bar doesn't stay like new for long - you soon have to slam the thing shut - wife still likes it, but I think I preferred the over-catch of the Kaymar.
Wife likes the strut assist on the ARB bar (and the look). To tell the truth - keeping the wife happy was probably more the reason I changed camps.

No problem obviously with the Kaymar bar falling apart, and while I haven't had the ARB bar for as long - everything still seems nice and tight.
Got a Simpson trip starting this weekend - hopefully things stay the same...

For what's its worth, if I had to choose again, I reckon I would go back to the Kaymar bar.

One other thing of note – ARB won’t do a power coat black version (they use the ARB grey which doesn’t match the black bullbars)
Pain in the butt when you need to pay to colour code it black! (not to mention $$).

And before the question is asked - the Kaymar bar from a Series II GU doesn't fit onto a Series IV (bugger).

Got a mate comin round on thurs night with a TD6 with the allterrain one fittd, will look at it...

Would love to get hold of one, and copy a few, laser cut materials, and get welded, sell say 12 of em would haev to be a tidy profit in it.

I have a Kaymar twin spare bar on the back of my GQ, and would never waste my time again.
Kaymar isn't the problem, it is all the extra weight of the bar, 2 wheel carriers, and two wheels hanging so far back from rear axle. cantilevered weight and all that..

Patrols end up with too much weight over the back axle IMHO that's why rear tyres wear so much quicker in the outback.
Next time I am going to see what cheesy offers in protection bars for the rear, and just carry a spare tyre casing on the roof, and a mounted spare on an alloy rim on the door.

email ya info got a mate lookin for some plans for GQ.

i've got custom made tube rear bar by sandy (aus4wd). he is about to make me a carrier to weld onto it. i had a kaymar rear bar on my 80 series but the thing was too heavy.

if you have 35" tires kaymar wont give you any warranty and dont recommend you hang a 35" spare. arb dont make a GQ bar.

I like the mods to the ARB bar. Looks good the way you have the reversing light in the bar and the way the exhuast is well protected.
