Hi all,
Got hammered with some questions about diffs by a new 4b owner at work, I didn't know so here they are:
1/ Can a 60 series diff center fit in a the rear of an early 80
2/ Can you drive in 2wd with the front diff center removed, or cv removed, or front drive shaft removed. And are any of these options safe.
I think he is planning on breaking down and whats to know his options (lol).
Cheers.

- I do not know but probably. Depends on if they are both standard 8" toyo diffs

Yes it would work and in my unofficial capacity - yes it would be safe - on removing the diff/drive shat removal bit. The CV joint on the other hand would not be safe as it feeds directly into the hub.[/quote]

Yes, but the bolt pattern for the driveshaft is different for the 81-84 60 series. The later 60 series will bolt on, with a minor difference in gear ratio (4.11 vs. 4.10).

Yes, as long as the center diff is locked or in low range. I've driven a part time cruiser with a CV removed. As Clown Boy said, it's best to remove the axle as well as it would otherwise be riding on the axle seal, wearing it out. Also the front diff needs to be locked if so equipped, otherwise the other side will not turn.
