Hi Guys,
Have been out today and glasshouse and despite all the thunderstorms and hail have managed to stake a tyre. Just wondering can side walls be repaired or is the tyre stuffed. Also your thoughts on running different size tyres as my spair is only 31" and others 33". I can't get hold of a 33" so unfortunetely have to run on the 31" until i sort something out. i have placed it on the front right and have disengened the hubs.

Havin trouble posting up pics of the tyre but the slice is about 100mm overall in an L shape and about 20mm down from the tread lugs

Cheers

AFAIK they wont repair sidewall damage due to the possibility of it blowing out, wont it steer funny with different sizes up front ? i would think you would be better off using the 31" as a rear tyre.

side wall damage is unable to be fixed mate so bad luck i guess

it shouldnt matter about the 2" in diff as long as you dont engage 4wd or lock the hubs if you do it will cause bind in the transfer

since 1999 You can tyre shops are not allowed to repair side-wall damge cos it was becoming a regular accurance that they were blwoing out and casuing crashes and blah blah blah

But ....there are some tyre shops still doing it

It's actually illegal to run different sized tyres across either axle, but you can run different tyres front to rear. This has been a grey area with the road authorities when it comes to the "space saver" spares too.

DONT RUN TWO DIFFERENT SIZE TYRES ON THE REAR!!!!!

You will kill the arse end of your car...........

On the front is OK to get you home, but running around on them you may get a defect notice......

Can't fix sidewall tears.

speak with a couple of tyre places, they know its illegal to repair sidewalls but the one i went to in melb, checked it out and fixed it, but said that they would not repair sidewalls unless they were happy to let it leave there shop. as it can be dangerous. the hole in mine was from some person putting a spike in it so it was very small. Its worth taking it to a few local shops(smaller dealers) to get checked out if your happy to drive on it. Only cost me $13 bucks to get mine done aswell

good luck

repairing sidewall damage is no worries they can valcanize the torn area good as new .

seem safe had them on back of GQ ute carrying heavy loads alot. actually run one tire to near bald & had side repaired from near new.

ring jason at artic-cool treads at oxley, i'd say he'll want to look at it, just drop it off let them have ago at repairing it, if they cant, they cant, but i've taken some tires they and have come back fixed.

if the slice isn't deep dont worry, ive got a 5 to 6 mm deep, 55mm lon g cut in my sidewall first day i took my silverstones out, only opens up when pressure is low, say 16psi, i just try and avoid that section of tire when rubbing past rocks, never had any trouble, i might tube it and use it as a spare, but since the slice hasn't grown, no drama. post a pic of your slice

my mate put a slice in one of his old tyres on his ute... he fixed it himself with some splicing glue.

never had a problem with it till the ute got written off. (not related tho)

Do you have a friendly tyre store? See if you can do a deal to "rent" a s/h 31" until you (they?) can find a suitable 33" replacement. At least you'll have two 31's on the front.

Replace the tyre , even if you have to get a 2nd hand one...

You can't afford not to.

sidewall damage can be repairable, as long as the cut/gash isn't too big and is vertical, not horizontal

A lot of tyre shops send them off for a 'major repair'.. as what 360 scout said, as long as the area is vulcanised it's no dramas to drive on again. (or you can chuck it up as your spare if you're concerned)

Gonna wack a newy on anyways just hopin they are in stock, Also will try to get the other repair for a spare.
What pressure do you recomend for offroad (soft, rocky, dusty, snady, shit) i never drop mine always just run standard 34psi, mostly cause i'm too lazy to pump up again. Would this have any affect on the tyre strengh.

Bias ply tyres are more repairable if you have a tear in the side wall, I wouldnt be doing a radial, maybe to only you home

bigqqqie,
if you are going to get the tire vulcanized & use it as a spare just be aware to inspect the repair once in a while, in my experiance the repair will start to perish after about 12/18 months so if you haven't worn the tire out buy then i'd get rid of it. just my observations, cheers
