I think I either need a new alternator or new battery (maybe both) for my BJ42. Anybody recomend a battery that can take my short driving pattern and suit the demands of a diesel at start-up?
If it is my alternator - anybody know the # of the stock one or recomend a better to replace it with?

any decent brand truck/4x4 battery will do it, n70z or a variant. we have run a range of brands, century and exide allways seem to crop up as reliable middle range batteries. Have a Delkor atm in the 40 which i'm very impressed with, lead calcite maintenance free kicking on 3 years now, however was $160 as compared with ~120 for others.
As for the alternator, replacements with vacuum pumps are extremely expensive. Its still the best option to have the original rebuilt and re-wound if required.

I took the rig into Opposite Lock in Alexandria and story is that the alt. is the issue. Mine is the one with the vac. so Gordon said it would run me close to $1000 for a new one (and that rebuilding is much cheaper!) Not sure how much the re-build will run.... I hear tomorrow.
Got a working one for $100 - consider it sold!! Have a heater core while your at the bits bin?

i bought a brand new alternator for a BJ42 a few weeks ago for around $500. From memory the standard one is 30amps and the one i have is 60amps i think. I will try to get the brand etc tomorrow. If you shop around you will be able to get it quite a bit cheaper than that as well. And that is brand new complete with the vacuum pump.

do let me know what sort of alt. you were able to track down for such a good price - I took a look around and couldn't find an expensive one, far less one I'd be happy to buy. $500 sounds pretty good - less than $500 sounds better!
No word back on the $100 used one - anybody know contact info for our friend in Vic?
I think I'm at the mercy of the mechanic on this one - he has my truck and I need it as my daily driver. Any thoughts on how much a rebuild should run me?
