spring over

hi guys, i'm new to 4x4ing and i went to my local 4x4 shop and he quoted me $2000 for a full spring over on my MQ, that happend when you get a spring over? and am i getting ripped off?

If you are new to 4x4 then why do you think you need a springover? If you don't even know what is involved with getting one done how can you be sure you need one?

ummm i will find out, when i spoke to him he said it wood take about 1 1/2 weeks drive in and out so i'd say it wood include all that stuff :? i hope!!!!!!

ok, on the MQ the spring is mounted underneath the spring pack, a spring over "SPOA" effectivly mounts the sping on top gaining you a lift = to the total heioght of the spring and pack combined.

By mounting the sping on top of the diff you change a lot of angles on stuff underneath the vehicle including steering, castor, drive shaft lenghts etc.

Most people who do a complete drive in drive out SPOA will charge around the $4500 mark as you need hi steer set up, new shocks, bushes, ubolts etc, cut and rotate diff, somtimes double card uni, drive shaft spacers etc, spring mount ( prolly forgotten stuff) and lots of time. I find it very hard to beleive that they would de a SPOA for that price, in fact a 2" sping lift ie new springs, shocks, bushed etc installed would be around that price, brand and type depending

I would suggest your clarify what is actually being done here

like grimbo says, what do you think you need a SPOA for??? for someone new to the game, get a set of decent tyre, even a small spring lift and learn to drive, have fun etc, getting in to a SPOA car you could well end up tipping it over and etempting stuff beyond your experience level

I think you are better to drive the thing and work out what you want, you may well drive it and decide you want a GQ or whatever and if you have spent a heap pf $$ on a rig you wont want to upgrade. and a I said, better to learn to drive it first

I second the whole learn how to drive line of thinking. As tiny said, a decent set of tyres and a small lift if you have the money would be more then enough for you to learn the skills and what to do and what not to do. You have to bear in mind that a SPOA MQ will be alot more top heavy and therefore prone to rolling/flipping if you do not know how to drive it.
Learn first then start to modify when you have an idea of what you feel you need ;)

mate ya beast looks pretty tough as it is, i reckon put that 2k into a rear air locker and it will be instoppable :D get used to doing wheelies tho!

edit: i'm leaving that spelling mistake, just to remind myself i need to slow down when i type...

yep nothing betterer :D than an instoppable MQ :D

I reckon an investment in lockers is also a good idea.

A SPOA will also require an engineers report to be done as well, especially if you are going to be paying that sort of money to get it done. Last thing you want is to get it all done and then have your vehicle defected and forced off the road.

Also I reckon you need to get a feel for the vehicle and how it behaves. You may alos find that in the end you don't want/need a SPOA. I don't have stuff on my car that I don't need, I prefer functional mods

Around $1200 for the locker then you need a compressor and to have it fitted- you may need new bearings depending on the age and Kms the diff has done.

Air lockers are a great investment and another bonus is the compressor that you can use to air up tyres.

I agree with others - you may want a springover eventually but there are other things you could spend your money on first and get much more fun and benefit from them.
