GU 2.8td gearbox trouble

Post by rats »

Hey all
Just after some advice, the wifes gu has developed a problem with third gear. When coasting or slowing down it falls out of third gear, doesnt do it when it has load on it ie accelerating.
I have been told it may be the syncro ring on that gear.
Any help or advice would be great thanks in advance.

Syncro's shouldnt have any effect. Generally the gear and selector ring gears have tappers on them, this is effectively wat holds the selector on the gear. There are also poppet springs with a ball at the end, these sit in slots along the selector shaft, when there is no load on the gear, these help to hold in gear, but its most likely as a result of the tapper on the selector ring been worn.

How many k's has it done? If third syncro is worn, crunches into gear, this could cause the tapper to wear. Safe to say it is goin to need a rebuild. :?

Thanks James
do you know of anyone in our area (Im in Coldstream) that would be able to fix it. The car has done 160 000km, it goes into gear ok no crunching so it is most likely not the syncro.

Thanks again
