Noisy Alternator on Zook

Is it usual to have a noisy alternator after going in the wet ??
Was getting worried that this bearing type noise was a problem in the motor....
I have just had the starter motor reco'd and now the alternator has to be done.....
How often does these items need attention? Or is that an irish question?
The more mud work the quicker they need doing? And can you high pressure hose them?

Heya, mmm....

Mud and alternators are bitter enemies- to the end! Mud in your hampster wheel will chop the brushes out over time until, like me a few years ago, gets to the point where no charge occurs and it's wet, dark and a long way home with only dim hadlights and wipers that would be beaten by a snail crawling across my windscreen...

Hosing it out is kinda ok- I'm no auto elec, however, it shouldn't hurt much- well, less than mud staying inside the housing! Noise could be the pulley on the alternator being worn or simply a worn belt... See if there's any movement in the alternator pulley with the belt off and/or check the belt for splits/cracks etc. Any more than 3 or 4 splits/cracks in a 5cm section of the belt and it's time for a trip to your local Auto parts shop for a newie ;)

If it's the pulley, replace it if you know how, or get someone that does or a mechanic to do it. Last resort may be a rebuild if she's all chopped out or may be cheaper just to get one in good condition 2nd hand/wreckers. :D

As I said, I'm not an expert, just going off what I know :lol:

Bit the bullett got a complete rebuild hope she lasts a while cause it cost me $172!!!!
Not sure what a s/hand cost but hopefully she'll give me a few cricket
seasons

Yeah when the fan belt was pulled off the "bearing noise" stopped turn the alternator and she was really noisy so new bearing and brushes and she's sounding ok............

I wont tell you that you can buy second hand 80amp bosch alternators for bout $50 and with a little heaving will fit in the standard space.

Good for him to know that now- I guess 20/20 hind-sight is something we wish we all had after other easier/cheaper solutions are revealed to us after we've just done it harder or its cost more $'s :D

End of the day bushpig, you did the right thing and fixed it before it could've failed when you would've relied on your zook to get somewhere important- to the pub I mean! Now you know there are various alternatives/options out there to fix little things that can cause bigger dramas later! :lol:

This is mazda or falcon alt?

I am looking for a EL falc one for mine, approx 110 amp i think, bolt in as well i believe apart from pully change

Thanks for that at the end of the day RACV are not interested in helping me out at the bottom of track in the Otways or similar.....

What is the Zooks alternator Rating??? And I am intrested in getting the 80 amp ver and have a play but what type and model would you suggest P.J Zook...... ps Yes I know what I paid was rich but I'm in a trade where I cant always justify a run around to repair as its not worth it to me. But I am glad you mention cheap alternatives as I will have a play... My question is if you beef up the alt can this cause electrical hassles or is more the better.... Got Narva 100watt Driving light +45 /55 standards (Ithink )then the rock box then the etc..... And whilst were on the electrical subject what type of battery does everybody use cause I would like the biggest physical and robust that one can get.....
