Turbo Charging a Suzi

hey guys/gals,

got a 1996 sierra 1.3 stock engine/car. i want to do some engine modifications. obviously as everyone knows they are as slow as my grandma on a bad day with her hip. so if anyone could enlighten me with some information on how to mod the engine or what i could do, and even possibly the kind of turbo i would need to do that.

the easiest way of getting more power out of the stock engine is a carby swap.
bolting on a vitara carby is the easiestand gives you about 10 - 20%moreand doesnt require any other mods or accessories.
A weber (32/36) can also be bolted on but to get the best power out of it you also need to get extractors and a finer filter. the weber will need some internal mods to handle angles better offroad but for outright power (from a carby engine) it is the best way.

With more power you will loose economy with a carby. The ultimate best way is to go for a EFI injection setup from a 8v vitara 1.6.

vit carby = easiest
weber+extractors+mods = better
EFI = Best option

HEY GUYS.

thanks dude, just wondering about the EFI. where would you recommend going to get a price, and have you got any idea how much one would cost?

Where are you?

CVE Performance is doing a Turbo on LTDHO's (from this board) Vitara.
They are more that capable of doing the EFI or turbo on yours, they are in VIC.

i am in brisbane. i will probably go to suzi worx if i do it. but im not sure if they will be able to due to difficulty getting products.

Suzisport have a supercharger kit. No idea how it goes though, although I know personaly that I'd prefer a supercharger than a turbo on my Suzuki.

Im currently turbocharging and adding multipoint injection to my G13A. I can get same kinda power with an engine swap and prob for less money, but waht the hell, someone told me i cant do it!

yer well it is all different things to think about. nothing will be happening for a while due to debt. but soon i will be able to start playing with engine mods. just out of curiousity PJ. zook how much is it costing you to do it? what type of turbo are you using?

I think he is using one off a Saab or a volvo I think. Or was that teh IC.

He got a twin turbo setup, and is using 1 turbo.

ok sic. thanks dude/s. on to another subject while i got you all ears. suspension!!! what kind of shockies have people used for thier coilies. i have a 1 inch lift in my car and the shocks are streching to the max. need to get some new rears. anyone recommend anything????????

If you have the money, buy a set of Koni's, they are a good brand, and they are rebuildable. Ball park of a thousand bucks for four.

The turbo is the smaller of the two from a sequential twin turbo setup off an import 1.6 rotary.

THERE IS NOTHING ON HERE ABOUT COILIES THATS WHY I ASKED., CHEERS LAYTO. ANYWAY SO IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT THEY HAVE USED IN THIER ZOOKS IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Very true.

The motor has been rebuilt and decomp'ed. Goes better already.
Once it's run in (another 500klms) then the turbo goes on! :D

Hey guys,

My mate runs a turbo 1300 Sierra. First he started with a blowthrough setup whereby he used a weber, as you can pressurise the fuel bowl, and a t2 of an ET pulsar.

The thing wasn't fantastic but it worked, and went better than standard. This has led to the second incarnation in which he has used an EA throttle body injection, using the same weber adapter plate, a really old school microtech(dial style), and a new exhaust manifold. He has recently upgraded to a t25 off a Nissan CA18DET.

I haven't been for a run in it yet but apparently with the slightly larger turbo he says it's runs heaps better. A lot more power. Running 7psi through the standard motor seems fine, and the old setup had been running like this for the last 2-3 years. I realise with the extra volume of air it may be a little different, but we'll see how it goes. A very cost effective way of turboing your Sierra. The car isalso intercooled as well.

If you can get you hands on a cheap ECU, then the rest can be had for a fairly good price. Butif your not mechanicallyminded and don't do much of it yourself, then $1500-$2000 i recon isn't much to outlay for a decent kit done by someone.

Failing that I have a supercharged CA18DE in my Mazda 1000/Sierra and it shits all over my mates sierra. And availability of these motors are plentiful and cheap. We just put one in my mates sierra and the motor/box/ecu/loom was $300. Wiring $250, Fuel tank $50 and we did everything ourselves. Something to think about. But I guess I'm bias being a Datto enthusiast. :)

How did you get on with the gearbox with the ca18de ? I ended up going with a box from a nissan 4x4 ute , ended up the same length as the original tcase . With the 5sp box out of a silvia the suzuki tcase would have been another 10 in back I think .

He used the manual S13 silvia 5 speed. What we did was move the transfer back 120mm I think, and being a LWB ute we were able to use the front tailshaft for the back and the back tailshaft for the front. There was very little distance between the rear housing of the G/B and the flange of the T/C so is was basically solid mounted using a rear output yoke from a R31 Pintara, CA20, and welded to the output flange of the T/C. In order for the motor to clear the tunnel the body was lifted 60mm using body blocks and the tunnel massaged a little. We also used the R31 clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder.

ALl in all he's happy with the conversion, but after driving mine he thinks he'll definately be going an auto when time permits.
