Want to make on for the GU out of 3 Inch Stainless. Will piping this size allow a 4.2 Turbo to get enough air?Would 4 Inch be better?

Hi mate personally wouldnt go anything less than 4" for a turbo diesel as the best thing for a diesel is to keep inlet temps down and you can do that by two ways 1. intercooler 2. more air .

The only way to get more air is a larger snorkle.

I know someone who is making these and they look bling as and are about $550.

Does anyone know if 4 inch will fit along inside the guard to join up with the airbox?I don't want it running all the way to the front of the vehicle on the outside.

I was asking about twin snorkels and was told that 1x3in was enough for the 5 litre V8. More would only be necessary for big top end Hp.

I don't see why a diesel woudl need more. Also, if the air moves faster (ie narrower snorkel) would it then have less time in the engine bay to heat up? (I'm just thinking out loud now)

I would check with someone who knows what they're talking about. Ross from the exhaustfix thread also posted something about intercoolers and intake piping so he may be able to help.

yes you can make it fit like this but if your running dual battery setup you will probably need to move it and put the second battery along side the other one or put in under the tray.

Most of the 4" snorkles for GU's dont run the full length of the guard they actually do come in the same spot as the safari/gen nissan units.

Saying all that there is still a bit of working getting your airbox setup as i would suggest getting a larger air box either donaldson or from a 4.5 petrol GU.

Someone else posted something similar to what you said in terms of air flow however you will find that the diesel do require alot of air because inlet temps increase due to the more fuel being added.

You can add an air ram to force more air in at speed however a thiner pipe isnt going to get air faster it also depends on your air box setup as well as the next restrictive part to the engine is the airbox a 4" snorkle and standard air box isnt going to be enough.

Diesel engines require a lot more air than the equivalent size petrol engines and even slightly larger capacity engines. There is a rule when working out the air requirements of diesel engines depending on there duty cycle that we use, but I cant find at the mo.

As for smaller snorkel having a quicker air speed and thus lowering air temp, Im unsure- but in saying that comp trucks running 4" intakes tend to have far better low down throttle responce ( available air ) as apossed to Trucks fitted with smaller snorkels.

Can you buy the top piece on a Snorkel to fit 4 inch?
Would truck spare shops sell them?

Yeah mate, there about $50/60 for a 4" and as you said truck spares. I got mine thru and exhaust and inlet ducting company.

Do you think 4 inch would look out of place on a GU?
Would something like this vibrate off on corrugations?Any ideas on securing it?
cheers

considering the many 10's of thousands out there with normal safari/airtek snorkels without issue, I think 3in would be ample - which is more than the Safari etc are on the inner guards etc.

I would suggest that making the pipework more direct would be more beneficial than anything else.

YMMV
