5.29 Questions

Ok only 3 questions, but they're about 5.29 gears

High pinion ? do they exist ?

A locker is independent of the diff ratio isn't it. A Hilux locker will fit regardless of the ratio ?

How weak (or strong) are the pinions really ?

1. You get the bundera high pin and put in 5.29, so they dont exist but you can make one.

2. Yes and yes (ifs fronts ARE different btw).

3. Some people break them, some dont. Its a driving style issue more than how strong the toothpick sized pinion shaft is on 5.29s.

You would need to get custom gears cut for high pinion. Toyota never made 5.29 high pin gears

You will find that the individual teeth on the crownwheel are bigger than the ones on a 4.875 crownwheel there being less of them on the 5.28 crownwheel . 37 on the 5.28 and 39 on the 4.875 crownwheel. The teeth on the 5.28 pinion are therefore larger and stronger than those on the 4.875 pinion.

Its not the pinions teeth that are the issue in 5.29s, its the miniscule size of the pinion itself that is the problem.

And for the record, my 4.88s have 44/9 teeth. ;)

The pinions have to be a smaller diameter to provide the correct ratio . If you want a bigger diameter pinion you will need a bigger diff. I run the power of a 190kw v8 through my 5.28s and they do not break.
Here is a picture of a 4.875 hilux crownwheel with 39 teeth
