yeah it would but why bother, if you are going to go to the trouble of custom piping fit a larger intercooler so you can run more boost?
thats my opinion anyway.

are you intending to top or front mount it ?
if top mount itd be ok but you will need a scoop
if front go bigger, but bigger= lag
we looking at putting an rx7 top mount on zer0's but dunno as it will cause heat sink when crawling
i say lpg inject it lol

Ya top mount....don't mind a scoop at all, in fact I like how a scoop looks.
Why? Because it is fairly cheap, looks super clean and is 100% Patrol. I have an SD33 in my MQ and eventually will be trying to get everything I can out of the motor. I like diesel and it is all I have. No TD42's in the USA and to import the TD42 is lot's of cash....plus if I was doing that I wouldn't drop a TD42 into my MQ I would drop it into my 77 Patrol Ute.
So would it be easier and cheaper to just fit an intercooler from an RX7 or even say a Saab? Any benifits to this option over the GU intercooler?

any core from any vehicle will help, ideally mount it up the front, the factory put them on top coz its cheap, you'd be silly to go to all the effort and plumbing for a top mount, especially as you will be only moving slowly on full load most of the time. I have never heard of a retro top mount but its up to you.
And $395 is fairly steep, I threw a heap of those coolers away coz nobody wanted them. I have seen Falcon XR-6 turbo units for $150 on this forum.

biggest problem with going front mount is you will end up with a sligth boost drop and noticeable lag due to the extra plumbing required
but a top mount would be absolutly useless when crawling unless you were to put in a scoop and prob a thermo fan
as it will get heat from the engine bay and actually heat the air
but if you only do speed work id say go 4 it
but sif pay that much
go to a wreckers and get one from a rx7 series 4 or 5 or a subaru wrx
something like that i wouldnt pay more than a carton as they are dime a dozen

It looks very similiar to one i bought of ebay ages ago for aboout $40. Its still sitting here waiting for me to use it. Id definatly use a thermo and seal it all up to the scoop properly.

alright thnx guys.....
Mostly I am thinking top mount simply because front and it is going to see mud, water and possibly sticks and crap. Top seems like it is much more protected. Nope no high speed in the old MQ SD33

I guess if I go top mount will have to see about using a thermo fan, ect ect. The GU unit seemed cheap to me because I am sure it is a $1000+ unit from Nissan new. I also like to keep stuff on my trucks Patrol but I can always make an acception.
