Be a bit careful of cheap efi 1.6 prices.

There seem to ba a few different versions of this motor and some of them can be harder to source parts for. Also, if the engineer you are using for the conversion sniffs that it is an import motor, he may refuse to approve it as emission control information is unknown.

These motors have been around for a fair while now too, so it would be helpful to know that you weren't getting an oldie.

Other than that, they are a great motor.

Steve.

Dan, Melbourne prices vary, dependant on km's on the motor. Low k's you're looking at about $1,500-$2,000 and obviously cheaper for higher k's. There are a few places that sell them out of 1/2 cut vitaras, just be carefull of the above issues raised by steve- emissions are a big deal these days and you may get caught out if you don't suss it out properly- if you were to get it engineered...? Get your bro to help you weed out the good ones from the dodgy ones, When/if you get one, try and buy the gear box with it- I know how you drive dude- 1.3 geary won't like your heavy right foot :D
Places like suzuki carbusters over the westgate bridge and 4play are not too bad on price. Try online as well- you may strike it lucky on here if someone's sellin' theirs ;)

Geez, $2000 seems a bit cheap too me! must have a hellava lot of km's on those cause i did some shoppping around and they werent nowhere near that cheap! And one of the place actually is sending engines interstate coz those states are low on stock and good engines!

Dan,
My 1.3 is sounding a little sad these days, so was thinking along the same lines! I popped past 4play (Kilsyth) to ask what joes thought sare...and for prices....He does the conversion ....kit and caboodl for $5 - 5 1/2 K!
He mentioned thats based on a low Ks import
Just so yo know!!!
Good luck, sounds like a great improvment to a zook!

have you considered a M15a from a swift or Ignis sport?? They bolt up to a late model jimny gearbox and go in real easy. All you need are jimny engine mount brackets to mount the motor.

this is a pick of the M13a and jimny box i fitted on sunday. Only took one day, and all thats left is a few bits and pieces and the wiring.

thats awesome gutless, ive always considered the m15, but always thought it would be too much pissing around.

Keep us updated on the coily build up.

M15A sounds like a good modern option (afterall 1.6l Vitaras are also getting old like Sierras)

Rough guide to pricing?

So the M15A is a straight bolt up to a Jimny box? or is an adaptor required?

I assume that Gutless did some research into this conversion, can we have some figures on this set up (eg KW, NM, gearing ratios, suitable yearmodels for donors etc) Looks like a very neat fit, so measurements appear right. If the only addition is new mounts it sounds a simple conversion (if any change of block, box, plus fuel injection is simple)

Sorry for misleading you all. I forgot to post that I have actually fitted the M13a jimny motor.

The piont I was getting at, but forgot to mention, was that the M13a, M15a, and M18a, all share a common bellhousing, thus making the late model jimny gearbox the easiest option for a conversion.

The M18a would prolly be too long. The M15a would be a tight fit, but definately worthwhile.

Power figures are as follows:

M13a... 62.5Kw@6000
110Nm@4100
Found in jimny. North-south orientation.

M15a.. 74Kw@6000
133Nm@4000
Found in swift. east-west orientation. Possible problems with water outlets and sensors near the back of the motor. Exhast manifold design may also be an issue when being mounted north-south. Wiring loom may also need extending in places.

M18a.. 92Kw@5500
170Nm@4200

Found in Liana. Also east-west orientation. Same problems as the swift motor. Length of the block may also be an issue.

I am also unsure if either the M15, or M18 run a hydraulic clutch or not, as this is quite common on cars, and not common on 4wds like the jimny.

The M15a has almost identicle power stats as the G16B, but does it with less capacity, and a hell of alot smoother with the VVTi. Its definately my pick of the bunch, and If it was available when I started my other sierra I prolly wouldn't have bought the baleno motor.

For a sierra, I would say that the Jimny M13a and box would be by far the easiest conversion, and a usefull 40% power gain, and 10% torque gain over the original carby motor. Not to mention the economy and offroad advantages.

The gearbox ratios are also slightly lower, with a higher overdrive gear to cut rpm in 5th.

And as for cost.....so far the conversion owes me a touch over $1500

I posted this on another forum. Some of the work involved in fitting the M13a and box.

The jimny box poses some problems. The shfter is operated via an extended linkage that makes the gearbox some 170mm longer than a sierra gearbox. Due to this fact, a portion of the floor must be removed between the original gear stick hole and the transfer hole. There are the clearance issues between the transfer shifter, and the new shifter neck of the jimny gearbox, so the transfer shifter will need modification.

Once this is done, a small extension to the original gearbox mount can be made. This is quite easy to do.

If you slice off the standard engine mounts, you can actuall lower the M13a in with the standard jimny mounts and brakets attatched to the motor, and they weld straight in, as the chassis are exactly the same width

Due to the longer gearbox, and the longer motor, there is little room left for the radiator if the standard engine fan remains. So off with the engine fan, and the radiator ALMOST sits where it used to. A few mods to the standard brakets will see the radiator in with enough room for 1 or 2 reverse thermofans for the front of the radiator.

There is no issue with sump clearance at all, nor with the firwall. The heater hoses almost line up, as do the fuel lines, battery cables from the starter, earths, exhaust and water hoses. The airbox needs to be replaced with the jimny one so as to use the IAT sensor. The standard sierra clutch cable will activate the jimny clutch mechanism with little modification to the cable end.

In my case I was able to use a standard coily jack shaft between the gearbox and the transfer with NO modification, but I can't comment on whether or not this will work with other model sierra jack shafts.

You are correct in saying that, my engine was one of these from interstate & yes, 4play is sourcing 1/2 cuts & engines from an interstate supplier. They may have gone up in price since I bought mine 3 years ago... Fitting labour only takes effect if you were to not do it yourself. From memory, dans brother is quite innovative when it comes to mechanical mods, as is dan. He may well be able to just source a motor with a gearbox and do it at home- if his old man lets him! :D
This is what mine ended up looking like fitted (1.6L mpfi) and with an air intake crossover to make the snorkel install a lil' easier. Engine works well, lots of torque and revs hard.

You got poo motor like I had, If you did not get one of the 900 that came into the contry in the first LWB vitaras then you have an import, the motor is fine, mine ran good, and I have herd these mototrs are better balanced, the problem I did have was getting parts, timing belt is different and costs more also took me ages to find a wiring diagram, cuz suzuki australia kept saying that the motor never existed, and I think I had a few issues with timing cuz the manuel I had diddnt match the inside of the timing cover, there where too many timing marks or something.
I had trouble finding a crank angle sensor too, I think injection parts may be a poo to find for this motor

Good while they go  :D

If yu fellas need aftermarket stuff for ur zooks, PM me, as I rep for an autoparts company and have access to a lot of distributor only suppliers. I may be able to get bits that cost a fortune over the counter for considerably less. i.e. injectors, sensors, timing belts etc...

Mick, you do love to stir. Paint just makes it look a bit easier on the eye, and something not so everyday. If you got a problem with joes builds, take it up with him- I'm not promoting his bussiness.
I guess a black engine matches a black engine bay and black diffs and black tyres... I get your point Mick, I'm a little unsure, however, why the shitstir? Have I bagged critter/ljextreme somewhere on OL ? I'm not pretending to know anything more than I do- just giving opinions and possibly helpfull advise. :?
Btw, the pic is off my phone and it takes indoor pics with a blue tinge for some reason, panels are purple. :D

Chill dude, i never mentioned joe, and the stuff about the motor are genuine problems that i found with it,

About the paint, that was a shit stir :finger: :finger:

Critta is no more   and my new buggy is the same colour as you engine bay

Np, I can take a stir as much as I can give one- so no animosity there. Critter was a neat rig- then you rolled it and chpped it, rolled it and chopped more... 'till it was almost a buggy :D Buggy is cool, less panel work means you can drive it and not worry about damage- too much. P.s. I'm not at Repco anymore- moved to another parts co. ;)

$2000 plus for a old vit engine ! holy smoke.

I just got a late model baleno motor for half that- heaps newer, low km's ( 40,000 ) came with everything ( Alternator, multi point injection, air con compressor, power steer pump, loom, relays, fusebox, airbox, 02 sensor, std exhaust manifold, all the brackets etc)

Not having a dizzy to stuff around with was a big plus, the loom was pretty simple, already set up for the accesories on the motor (power steer idle up, thermo fan control etc)
The air inlet is on the drivers side, so the standard airbox and snorkel hooks straight up. even used the standard throtle cable.
Retail on them is about $1200 from suzifour, but I'm sure theres other wreckers out there, being out of late model wrecks- they're Australian delivered motors you can check the kms on.

There's a thermostat extension housing on the back of the block, if you're goping to use this you need a vitara multipoint waterneck (to make the 90 degree turn) or if you're going to relocate the thermostat you need a holden red motor waterneck.
Other than that, a sierra flywheel and pressure plate, sierra starter with some grinding, the water jacket of the sierra water pump, sort the mounts and bob's the guy bothering your auntie.

Got quote $1600 for a half cut but it did not come through, they are not exactly a dime a dozen in Japan as we often assume
So........
Just scored 1600 MPEFI with computer 3 speed auto with divorced tranfer kit on LWB chassis for 2k :D
Let the comp truck build up begin

Yep. i got my frontcut for 1600 complete already, only 44k on it. tried for a baleno one but noone had them around for sale esp for the dollars.

I was mainly after pics on diff setups for the vit airbox to a snorkel in a sierra.

cheers
