Hilux altenator

Hi all,
Ive got a 2.8d lux. I had the altenator reco'd about 12mths ago after it shat itself when i hit a decent puddle of water on the road after heavy rain. I put the lux into some water up the bush today and the dash lights are on again which tells me its playing up. Are these a commomn problem when wet. Is there anyway to protect it a bit more?
Anyhelp appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

VERY common problem with Lux's. My mate had exactly the same thing with his alternator on his 2.8, I had it shit itself three times on my old 2.4d Runner, and had it happen once so far on my 2.2L petrol Runner. I've only had the new one offroad twice.

The problem is the location, Hilux alternators are right down the bottom, along side the sump. Every bit of crap and shit and mud gets flicked onto them as soon as you get to excited, which in turn overheats the Diodes and farks it. And they're not the best Alternator anyways.

Protecting it? I'm trying to come up with a shield to go around it in such a way that it doesn't over-heat it, yet still protects it. But recently I haven't had time.

Best thing to do is stay out of the mud as much as possible. I say that cause its sooo much fun, but the novelty wears off when you fork out for a new alternator every time you go wheelin. Or get it re-mounted higher in the engine bay, but I hope you've got the $ or the fab knowledge to do it!

Don't bother getting it re-built/reco'd either, just get another one from the wreckers when it dies......

Good luck!

I have an 85 Hilux and had it to Hell and Back without any alternator problems ( touch wood)
Is the alternator on a 2.8 different to the one I have on my truck ?, cause I have heard of that problem before.

what Motor is yours Gatta? I'm guessing 2L if it's Diesel...

You'll find all the alternators within the engine types fit within eachother. ie: L, 2L, 3L, 5L interchange. 2y, 3y, 4y interchange etc etc. The only difference should be the plug on the back can differ between the year models.

Thats to the best of my knowledge anyway....

Early models had a rear mount vacuum pump. The 3L is front mount. Is yours rear mount?

Yes, the 3L onwards have frount mount vacumm, and are 90 amp, compared to earlier rear mount and 55 amps. 3L> alternators bolt up to a 2L, youll need to get customised vacumm lines tho, not sure if the 3L ones will fit.

You could.. but why? was more getting at that you could fit a 90amp Alt from a 3L onto a 2L, but you would need to look closely at the vacuum lines as im not sure where the oil pick up points are on the 3L block, if they are the same as a 2L, in which case you would need/not need custom oil lines.

Funny there +dj_hansen+ as myn is a 89 2.8 with original alternator in it and my vacume pump is on the rear facing the firwall, with the oil line on the back of the pump just under the electrical connection and the other end coonecting to the block just under the oil filter. Both end have banjo type fitting, I have had myn in many river crossings head light depth (high country) and shit load of mud and never had a problem except the water trap light and alternator light coming on at the same time, this only happened twice from excess water in the high country but dries out in 10 mins and no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky. Regards Steve M

Mine done that as well. Lights came on but they didnt go off :bad-words: I have also heard some of the models around 89/90 have front mounted pump and some rear  guess it just makes it a little more confusing

Yeah TGH11X I think toyota like to do that just to make it hard 4 us all, I need a new clutch coupling on my radiator fan, Toyota $335, non genuine $100. toyota says the one off 5L is different to mine, spare parts shop + ebay say they fit a few different models go figga, I was also told by 2 spare parts shop to go genuine as they have had trouble with their aftermarket ones with not working and/or causing vibrations so will bite the bullet and go genuine.
