Hi All,

does anyone know of a place in brisbane/gold coast that does Speedo repairs. It turns out the previous owner of my cruiser thought it would be great to wind back the k's using an electric drill. so every now and then the speedo goes nuts and the needle goes off the clock. then rights itself and is fine for another month or so.

strange i tell you, but i want to get it fixed.

Thanks

G

I thought all the 80 series had the electronic speedo.
But I'm going off experience with a 1995 gxl.
If this is the case with yours, IMHO its most likely the sensor on the transfer case going haywire. I could be wrong.

i was told this by an Auto Electrician, but there is a distinct cable [not wire} to the gearbox. The car is a 1990 gxl, one of the first run that came out with the 3f motor.

my understanding is that any work to speedo units is to be done by qualified/licensed people of which there is one mob in brisbane that I know of

I don't understand how a mechanical speedo can go haywire like that. Electric? I understand.

Good luck,

imagine say the inside of the speedo has plastic "gears" and due to the highspeed drill used to wind back the clock, they get damaged. then every once in a while they dont mesh and the speedo gos nuts whilst driving. i then have to pull over and the needle returns back to zero and then its fine again for another few months. its a totally random thing that gives me the sh!ts.

Thanks for everyones feedback. i will go hunting.

I can imagine that, in which case I would expect the teeth to skip, and both speedo and odometer under-read.

An electronic speedometer is essentially a pulse counter. The sender on the transmission sends a series of electrical pulses, which the dash counts, and drives the speedo and odometer. If you have a dodgy electrical connection, random electrical noise could also be interpreted as pulses at the dashboard end, and cause both the speedo and odometer to over-read.

But I've been wrong before, and I expect I'll be wrong again. :D

Cheers,

Scott

My cruiser was the first run of the 80 series. it has a mechanical speedo cable that runs off the side of the gearbox. the later models came out with the sender.

But what your saying is right, i will have to take note to see if the odometer stops when it has the next fit.
