I called toyota today about getting some viscous hub fluid and he asked me how many bottles i needed, they come in 18ml bottles so I would guess two or three? Can anyone help with a quick answer? Oh yeah Diesel GQ. Cheers

From memory I only used two and that was plenty. It's an easy job, I sealed mine with some gasket goo cos I wasn't happy with the O ring, looked too light to me.
Good luck with it. Paul
P.S. I built that rear bar same as your design, came up great! So thanks for that!

Cheers thats what I thought it would be. Sorry I forgot about getting the dimensions on the bar but sounds like you got it sorted anyway.

Yeah I got three or four and only used two, only because I kept topping it up as it seeped into the gaps etc. I still used the o ring by the way, just added some gasket goo before putting in back in and then on top of it. If you put the o ring in then sort of bunch it togther and work it back in with the goo it won't pop out when you're trying to put the two halves back together, you'll see what I mean anyway. Makes a massive difference to your cooling when you fix this, you'll be happy with it.
Yeah the bar came up pretty good considering I used a stick welder, still need to weld some braces back to the chassis rails on some brackets, been a bit slack. I'll get some pics and post em up soon.

Used in the viscous fan coupling. Only the GQ 4.2 Diesel one's are servicable apparently - and maybe some of the 3l petrol??? someone will correct me...

and the L28 petrol also is servicable.

Its a silicone based oil used to operate the viscous huge, it works on friction basically. The oil is only available from Toyota dealers as far as I know.
Heres some instructions that come in very handy, exactly the same process for a Patrol. I used some gasket goo to reseal mine cos the oring was a bit dodgy!

Years ago I refilled theone on on my L28 engine, I didn't know what fluidwas originally used so I used plain old 50wt engine oil, the fan worked well although it was too stiff when cold and locked up early. But better than screwing it solid I guess.

Would it be possible to service a 4.2 petrol hub by drilling a hole, empty out the old fluid, refil it and use a grub screw or something similar to close up the hole???
Just wondering

Even the smallest piece of swarf from drilling/taping will bugger the whole operation I suspect, the tolerances inside are real close I think it works on heat activated friction plates made of metal.
It's a good idea to try when apart so the volume can be fine tuned later.
I think I will try your idea when the time comes.

if any of you guys have the viscus hub off the TB42 which cant be pulled apart you can always buy a new hub to suit a TD42, but bear in mind you will need to buy a new fan blade,
the TD42 hub i have on my petrol wo0rks fine, doesnt look like overheatiing at all,

Yes one morning before starting the car spin the fan and take note of how easy or hard it is, then when the engine is hot and I mean hot like after a 30 minute middle of the drive, 4 wheeling etc check it again, if it has not got noticeably stiffer (it should never actually lock up) it is working but how well will still be a guess.
You can also work out some way to estimate the amount of air it is pushing at idle hot and cold.
The one that I did actually got easier to spin the hotter it got so it was well and truly stuffed. Filling it with oil made it work too well at all temps.
