Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Anybody upto date with the latest on victorian RWC requirements?

Looking through dealers yards the other day, and dealer tried to tell me that it's roadworthy in Victoria to have different tread patterns on the front wheels and that this requirement changed some time ago.... Is this correct or do i steer clear of him?

treads may be different on the rear, but must be the exact same size. front treads must be the same, and same size.
front to back can be different, but i don't know the margin that is allowable

Thanks CrushU. That's exactly the way I understood it. The story goes that the dealer claimed that the roadworthy had already been done. I pointed out it couldn't have been due to the tyres being different and he claimed that this is no longer a road worthy item and hasn't been for some time.

I cannot see how differing front tyres can be anything but dangerous. Assuming same size, the different grip levels, water handling, sidewall stiffness etc would send the vehicle all over the road.

that is why it is ok on non steering axles.

well bugger me If i can read right ...you can have differant tread pattern's

might get a RWC but I still dont like the idea

i do roadworthys at work and i would never fail a car for different tread patterns as long as the tyre size is the same on each axle i would pass it (and obviosly tread depth legal also )

Of course you can. I magine if you run 5 x BFG M/T's get a puncture and use your spare and then get a second puncture. You go to the tyre shop and he doesn't sell BFG M/T's but can give you a great deal on a Cooper STT. It's a different tread. Do you think that your car isn't roadworthy? Of course not. Ever heard of the ACCC? You can have 4 different tyres with different treads as long as you don't mix radials with other stuff or something lilke that.

yeah great great but Im thinking mainly about hard stoping in the wet....wouldent it be fair to say differant tyre tread's proform diffently??

I don't agree with it, definately don't think it's safe (especially in wet conditions), but it appears that the dealer is correct.

Thats great! I'm going to put a H/T on one side and M/T on the other side so my car will be half as noisy, and I can still go off road.

I also don't like the thought of having different tread patterns on steering axles, in an emergency well, thats different.

I also am a LVT in victoria and i agree with the rule. You can't tell me that two different tread patterns is going to make the vehicle perform any different, be it underbakes, wet or dry, than one brand new tyre and one tyre worn to it' limit... We're talking about second hand cars! not showroom stuff, not everything is going to be as it was new.
