80s clunking noise (also in general)

at first i thought it was just the suspension clunking around as it usually does till i know have a noticable clunk that comes from the rear at times i can only determine when there is initial drive load to the rear, its just one clunk then drives no dramas and i can only seem to make it happen doing the following and this isnt 100% surity during my test runs.eg, from a standing start or driving into a drive way (low speed stuff).

i had my brother drive the car back and forward while i looked underneath and im pretty sure its in the rear tail shaft but couldnt determine which end as it was pissing rain.

Ive recently converted to part time 4wd and was thinking unis but i thought the noise would be continious if this were the case no.......this sounds expensive.

thanks in advance

regards
nathan

You will probably find it is the suspension links. It only takes a very small amount of movement in one of the links to make it clunk initially under acceleration. Just tighten the links as tight as you can get them and see if the noise goes away.

If it doesnt, then start thinking bigger. Simple things first.

finally fixed it. noticed excessive movenent in the tailshaft at the back of the transfer so got that shimmed tighter but the noise was still there. got it flexed up and although the lower adjustable arms were locktited tight against the knuckle, the thread inside the nuckle had stripped itself and was slipping in and out.

gave them the good news with the welder and now tight as a nuns nasty. :D

cheers for the ideas.
