Has anyone built their own roof rack and fitted it to the internal gutters on a 100 series?

The reason why I ask is because I made a roof rack for my GQ Patrol which I would like to mount to my 100 series. Obviously the mounting systems are different between the two vehicles, but without spending $150 at TJM for their brackets to mount the rack up, I'm not too sure how to do this. Considering the rack only cost me $120 in steel and paint, I'd like to learn of a way to attach my rack to the roof mounting channels - without the project doubling in price.

I'm sure this can be done, thus I'm interested to see ways in which people have self made brackets to mount theirs.

Any input at all will be appreciated.

yes, I built my own roof rack (originally for an 80 series), cut the legs off and fitted it to my 100 series.
I fabricated brackets which bolt to the mounting tracks (internal gutters). I made them out of 20mm * 5 mm flat, drilled 10 mm holes at (I think) 83 mm centes, welded on some 50 mm * 3 mm posts, and after a lot of dicking around, manged to attach my 80 series roof rack.
The reason why I did this and did not go out and buy a new one is because my dinghy is too wide to fit on a standard roof rack, and I had built a nice aluminium rack for my old 80 series to fit the dinghy. I remember at times when I was doing the conversion that I had wished that I had gone and bought a car with normal gutters - with the 100 series the whole process is a real pain in the bum.
You can buy cheaper brackest than TJM. Tradesman Engineering in Melbourne make racks for 100 series and will sell you 6 legs for about $80. I did buy a set of legs from them, but they were not quite what I wanted, so I returned them and made my own.

I'm going to pull off my factory toyota sports racks this weekend and set about cutting the legs off my GQ rack. I've found a place close to me at work which will sell me stainless legs for $22 each. I'll have to weld some tabs onto my rack and hopefully it will just be a case of drilling some mouning holes and then bolting it all together.

I'll keep you posted how I go with it.

There are 3 sets of mounting holes on the roof and there are all differant hole centres which makes it fun to fabricate

Damn, it sounds like it won't be 'that' straight forward then. I'll have a poke around this weekend and see what I can come up with.

What did you use to make your roof mounting brackets? Mild steel? Stainless Steel?

Yep it was a bitch of a jobtomake the mounts

I used light steel tube, i have 3 cross bars and a basket bolts on top.

I can use the cross bars like normal roof racks , with out the basket

I've got three factory toyota roof bars on there at the moment. Perhaps I should just cut the legs off the rack I made and attach it to these bars.

It's light as it is and all I want to do with it is carry bulky items like swags and attach a bit of shade off the side. Perhaps also maybe mount a long handle shovel to one side.

I'll see how it all lines up then decide..................
