are there any higher output alternators that'll bolt up to the brakets on a g16b (16valve injected)??? went to start the vit tonight for its first run and the alt is dead (along with the battery), and may as well upgrade if i can do it simply

Yes!!

EL falcon ONLY!!!! same output voltages but higher AMPS. The base model one is easiest to get and is about 85A, or you can try to find the GHIA altenator which puts out 110A, but are much dearer. No other falcon ALT will work.

I have been assured that they are bolt on, and that the pulley lines up perfectly. If you aren't fitting this before sunday, I can get some pics up on the weekend for you, as a mate of mine is doing this swap on the weekend.

I'm not sure :? , but if a vitare ALT bolts to a sierra, then so will an EL ALT.

Used an 85A unit ex commodore i belive in my sierra;

gives a write up.

Engine is a G16A so should be no issue in a Vit.

Side note, have sheared the swing arm block bolt at the water pump in both rigs, after easy outing the offending remains have shimmed the bracket to try and adjust for minor offset.

Still pumps out a fat load of amps to keep the electrics happy though!

EL alternator will bolt up to a 16a motor, the only problem is the connection plug, standard is 3 pin plug. the ford EL is a 2 pin connection apart from that the ford alternator is slightly bigger but just fits in.

ive been thinking of doing a mod like this to my sierra......but can never get a straight answer from a mechanic or auto sparky. How does the stock 1.3L cope which such a big alternator? esp @ idle

The output of the Altinator has no impact on idle or anything for that matter. All you should find is that if you hang lights, fridges ect off of the power supply then a larger altinator will keep up with demand easier than the stock 70A gennie. Think of it like...the altinator will only supply the amount of current that is required. It's the same as charging a battery. Batteries only accept the amount of current they need. It's the voltage output of the altinator that will need to be checked. You may have to adjust it to the same output voltage as your stock altinator so you don't overcharge you battery. If you don't you'll end up with a off egg smell coming from the battery. In other words it is cooked.

If you guys know of one that will bolt straight to a M13A I would appreciate it.

Cheers :)

I have had an EL alt tested, and its output voltages are the same as the G16B. Should be a straight swap.

what is the going price for the EL Gennie?

New I think they are under $200. A mate just bought one new from his local sparky for $165......

There are 2 versions tho. One is the poverty pack model, and puts out 85A ( the above mentioned price applies)

And the other is off the upspec Ghia models/ V8's etc with all the bells and whistles, and puts out 110A. Both are suitable for the G16, but the 110A model is VERY dear.

85A is plenty IMO.

just to add to this old post

I tried the upgrade to the 110amp EF alkt and it wont work if you only use a stock V pulley. the alt is to heavy when under a charging load and will keep snapping belts. you have to go for a MULTI V groove belt to turn the heavier alt. I ended up opting for a swift 60amp instead.

do you mean el or ef. as it states only el ones fit.

also g16b already have those, :)

i went to the wreckers and got an EB Ford alt. only 60A tho. straight bolt up.
only mods is to swap the wires.

EF and EL alts are the same. they use the same brackets and mounting points so both will fit. there are 85amp and 110amp ones but i havenot yet seen an 85amp one. I do know there are two brands., one is a bosch and the other is a mitsibishi alt. The mitsi alts are easier to come across and are 110amp. easiest to bolt in to as ya only need to drill out the botom holes on the engine bracket.

oh here are some pics when i did it to the sierra
