When a GU runs out of Diesel ?

Hey,
Just curious, what happens when a GU diesel (3L TD) runs out ? Once pouring fuel back in will it start ? will i do any damage ?

i did it once
you can hand prime it using the filter pump and lots of cranking

you fill tank, prime it (its marked in the manual), and sometimes its a good opportunity to change fuel filter while your at it as it will have sucked gunk through + the filter will be MT.

There is a possability that you could damage the catalytic converter if it runs out of fuel so it is not something that should be done regularly.

Thanks all,
I have a nasty habit on driving and filling up on empty. I may start to fill up earlier now I jnow this. Will also start digging through the manual as it's sure to happen one day !

if u run out of fuel easiest way is to. fill it with fuel, pull off fuel line to injector pump-outlet of fuel filter- and hand prime the fuel with the pump on the filter while blocking the outlet of the fuel filter with your finger to create some vacuum. reconnect and continue to prime until the car will at least try to start.
gregorys make a good manual for '98-sep '04
also on ebay i got the original workshop manual with the supplements all of them, for $11 delivered.
to get the genuine nissan workshop manual including supplements your looking at about $1000.

also may pay to at least try to keep "some" fuel in tanks, heard somewhere that it gives condensation a better chance with em empty. Dunno how true, but I've never seen my engine light/water thingo.
BTW I actually had a go at changing my own fuel filter the other day and I filled the new one up with diesel before pumping the button about twenty times and it started.

I dont know if this is true but they say to keep the diesel tanks reasonably full as excess diesel that flows back to the tanks heats up the fuel which is a no no.

its the large muffler looking doover verticly situated just downstream of turbo near back of engine.
googled "Diesel catalytic convertor" and found this --
A two-way catalytic converter has two simultaneous tasks:
Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
Oxidation of unburnt non-methane hydrocarbons (unburnt and partially-burnt fuel) to carbon dioxide and water: CxHy + O2 → xCO2 + mH2O
This type of catalytic converter is commonly used on diesel engines to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions. They also were used on spark ignition (gasoline) engines in automobiles up until 1981, when they were replaced by three-way converters due to regulatory changes requiring reductions on NOx emissions

no cat, i looked at binghams, would soot up in know time they run way too cold.
keeping the tank full is an old truck story to keep the area for air smaller so when it cools precipitating water. less air- hence reducing condensation inside the tank and water troubles.
