My alternator in my 2H, 75 series has packed up. What has it cost other people to get it repaired by an auto sparky, compared to getting a secondhand one and putting it in yourself.

My sparky told me a new one is around $400. A rebuild is around $80 from memmory.

Thanks mate

I was told by the local sparky that it will be about $200, if there is nothing wrong, and maybe $500, if I need a new one.

Check the brushes on the rear of the alternator, I've fixed this on my car a few times. Mud gets between the brushes and the armetuer (spelling!??!?). This then holds the brushes in an open position (slightly away from the armatuer and causes the alt not to charge. Sometimes it looks like they are making contact but you really need to take them out and make sure they have some spring tension, so they make proper contact.

If its something further than that, a changeover would be the next step.

Hoestly, I don't bother mucking around when it comes to Tojo Alternators. if it packs it in, get one from the wreckers, don't bother with reco's + rebuilds. Toyota alternators are renouned for bein crap and dying easily. And any good wrecker will have a 3 month warranty anyway.

If you can fix it yourself as Tiy80D said, then even better...

Will always be more expensive than a petrol due to the vacumm booster for the breaks on the alternator. Comeplte rebuild for my 2.4l Diesel alt from hilux was $230 couple of months ago...

Maybe see if one of a 1HZ will fit? as another option at the wreckers if u go down that path...

I have the 1hz in my 80 series, doesn't have any vacuum equip on the alternator. Looks very similar to the petrol (4.5 1997) alternator too!

Well its all fixed. It was only the regulator. This was also causing my glow plugs to not glow.
