Was looking at Exide Orbital starting/deep cycle battery today (as they are on special) and was thinkng of getting a couple, would these be any good for winching if running in parallel. They say 750 cca, the guy at the battery place told me they are closer to around the 1000 cca mark, but when he put his tester on it it read 1211 cca, they are also 50 ah.
Any good?
Need to be a gel aswell as they are going in the car

just to let u no why they r on special is because they r no longer manufactured, i wanted a couple here in west oz and i sell exide batteries for a living thru the rac, and do u think i could get them cheap? they still wanted 350 a piece, that cca that he tested it to would not have been for very long, also it probably would of melted his load tester, so they are not really rated to 1200 cca.

Not sure why they arent making anymore.. but i have one and cant fault it. Dont use it for winching, but havent run it flat using stereo for 4+ hrs when camping.

Think it was round the $220 mark from australian battery company in nunawading... 3 year full replacement warranty :D

Mate, i competed in last w/ends piranha pursuit where we sucked dry of deisel on SS3 first day because of such steep incline. Anyway, Ruffy and Barretta managed to dead winch himself with no drive at all up one of the most hell hills i've ever seen. His battery somehow survived two 10 metre tough winches. AC Delco, I wouldn't even look at another battery when I buy my next one.

Unfortunately, Patrolpaul and I were dealt the same hand of bad luck. This time, however, the battery died in the arce after only a metre or two without the engine running. Which resulted in a 2hr recovery in the driving rain, 0 degrees and night-time

But we still finished 4th o/a :D  :D

the orbital never came out with a 3 year warranty, sounds like a stuff up to me but i could be wrong. the reason they r discontinued is because they didnt reach the sales they wanted.

What he said!!!

AC Delco. I have the N70ZZ equivalent which is rated at something like 730 cca and 90ah. It kicks arse. Betta batteries in ballaraat are the distributors vic wide or i'm sure you can find a local dealer. They are sealed aswell!!

IIRC the proper CCA test involves the battery being at around 0 degrees Celcius? That would explain the higher reading.

BTW I had my aux tested on one of those multimeter type CCA testers once and it registered a good 120CCA higher than what was written on it. Not bad for a $69 500CCA battery that was well over 18mths old. Gives you an idea of how accurate the test is at normal temps. ;)

I ended up getting the batteries at Pirahna for $250 each (Excide qouted $360 each), they tested them there and read around 1200cca, and on ones that were used and down in voltage (12.3v) read 1150cca. Not bad for a 750cca battery.
