Outer Limits 4x4 Board

if anyone could point me in the right direction that'd be great!

driving at 80km/h + in my swb GQ occaisonally when i hit a bump i get a rotational grinding noise like the tailshafts/wheels are rubbing on something then another bump will stop it. but only occaisionally, under brakes it stops around 70km/h. it is also just audible (I pulled the gearshift boot out and its much more noticable now)

I've had each end up on stands, nothing is loose, hubs feel tight, brake shroud? is tight and not clashing anywhere brakes are tight all pads are new and secure, nothing anywhere near the tailshafts, all uni's seem good. I cant find any tell tale scrub marks anywhere etc

engine mounts are new, gearbox mounts seem ok (jacked up gearbox and checked for cracks etc)

where else can I look?????

diagnosis is critical. quite often exhaust noise is overlooked.? rattles bumps etc. where is it coming from ( front / middle / back of car .) if you can put the noise in a particular "zone" it will make diagnosis easier. an old saying is " its hard to quote something over the phone".

Do you have a lift under your Shorty? Maybe one of your Uni's is close to its limit causing this horrible sound, only a maybe but!

do you have a long range fuel tank?? had a gq with big tank and lift was hitting the uni/tailshaft at the diff on articulation and bumps??

3" spring and it's been in the car for around 2 years now so the uni's mighta finally flogged out, they feel nice and tight, its the intermittent bit thats killing me

that was what I initially thought as its a similar sound as when i busted my engine mounts and the tailshaft was hittin the tank but the tank is well and tight. I also went to the extreme of putting some new fresh paint on it to see if there was any scrubs anywhere!!

thats whats killing me, the noise is only there for a short period of time and it resonates down the tranny tunnel so short of drilling a hole and running some hose under the car to use as a "stethoscope" I'm all outa idea's as to what it could be

is it there when turning under power from a stop?

Could be possible that its something loose in your handbrake drum. It happened to me once. Was a nightmare to find it but about half hour to fix.
Well worth a look and if nothing there then you can adjust it up anyway

what about wheel bearings?

driving down the hiway one day towing the trailer and something happened that felt like I just blew a tyre. Stopped, had a look and couldn't see anything. Kept going, thought it was a bit strange but it turned out I'd felt the front wheel bearing collapse. Over the following week or two I kept hearing this grinding squeeling sort of sound, but only when I was going slow. Shoulda seen me, hanging me head outa the window doing 40 through town trying to work out where this goddam noise was coming from!

900 bucks later, I had two new wheel bearings, and the swivel hubs greased and serviced (dry as - hadn't been done for ages, and this was supposedly dealer serviced from new, so the logbooks said...)

next time try depressing the clutch as it may be something in your belhousing last time i blew a clutch in my old ltd i would hit a bump and a little piece of clutch finger that had snapped of would get picked up by the cluch and would make a bloody awful raquet

I've tried the clutch, not that... gunna pull apart the handbrake next weekend, hadnt thought of that yet, Thanks notnot!

any other idea's?

apart from dismantaling your truck then rebuilding it with all new parts its allmost like a hit and miss

I have started getting the same thing, Im figuring its uni's. My 5" lift has been on my shorty for about 2 years or just over so it would seem right that the uni's have flogged out

Hmmmm I could take the lazy option and wait for you to fix yours and find out what the prob is.....get to it boy, fix your shorty
