looks like i have a split/cracked timing belt cover. i'm fearing the worst $$.
i have a few questions...
can anyone tell me how available this part is? does anyone know a feroza friendly mechanic in sydney? (preferably west-ish) am i risking greater damage by continuing to drive the roza around? and the million dollar question, what would be the approx total cost of repairs, taking into account that i may as well do the belt as well, if the thing's already in pieces?
thanks

timing belt cover?!
its plastic!
just find one at a salvage yard, or if you dont care about looks, just j-b weld it.

Is it cracked at the top centre? I think you'll find most Feroza's are like that.

Mine was cracked on the old motor - and the new exchange motor one also cracked, at the top and at the left bottom bolt....
As long as it still 'seals' from oil and gunk, you are fine

as you may be able to tell, i don't have a clue...
i've only had her about 2 weeks and i haven't had a chance 2 explore all her nooks and cranny's yet.
yeah as far as i've looked the only split is just top and centre around the bolt.
do the roza's tend to use a bit of oil? mine was very low! didn't notice any major leaks anywhere... yet...
thanks for the info! sorry in advance for any other trivial questions that i may have in the future...

Don't recal ever seeing a HD engine timing cover that wasn't cracked either Feroza or Applause. As everyone says it doesnt matter as it just keeps stones etc out of the timing belt. Stick it together if it bugs you.
Do change the timing belt at the recomended intervals however as the valves and pistons will touch and do damage if the belt breaks. Its easy to do - instructions are on WARFS.ORG
Don't overtighten the cover bolts - if you are worried about them falling out use Locktite.
As for oil - it depends on many factors, but mine (200000KM +) progressively uses but runs fine considering its vintage. Its a little unpredicatable however - seems to be ok for weeks then will take a dive.

Mine uses a very small amount, around a 200ml per 1000km at a guess? Engine has done 190000km and hasn't got any leaks.

hmmm, ok i'll keep an eye on it. it just seemed to be ridiculously low for no apparent reason.
thanks again...

my 1.3 charade had the exact same thing as well as my feroza and my old mans.

I think every 1.3L or 1.6L timing cover cracks in the factory, my old charade did it, my brothers roza has it ( just checked
). As for oil consuption, check it. Fill it up and check how much it takes to get back to the full mark in say 5,000KM. My brothers is pretty good with usage. Cant be worse thant LS1 holden motors. When i was working on them for a living they said that around 1L per 10,000KM was okay, so basically they would drink 20% of the oil refill quantity and it was okay
But then again they also had undersize pistons and piston slap issued early on too.
Layto....

You need to keep an eye on the oil level in a Feroza (even if it doesn't use much) because they only hold around 4 litres.... It doesn't take much usage before you're near the "LOW" level.
Usage will depend on the oil viscosity your using too.

thanks for the feedback
i'll keep an eye on it and try and have a closer look for leaks this weekend. been looking for any drips/puddles where i've been parking, nothing to speak of really. topped it up with some 15/50, not sure what it had in it previously...
pretty happy with the beastie though. obviously would love a bit more power, but from what i've been reading, i'm not the only one.
the whole air filter and header/exhaust topic seems to stirr up some conflicting views. the tech articls on warfs seem to suggest that not only do the high-flow filters offer better breathing but also filter better. but reading some of the past threads, some people think they don't filter as well. same with headers/exhaust, some say mrt are crap others say they're great. i guess you'll get varying points of view on any topic, but it maks it hard for me, who doesn't have a clue, which option to head for in the future...
teach me the ways of the feroza oh wise one's....

first lesson for the lowly feroza pawn.....
first, you must catch a goat, then you need to hide in a place where no one will see you, then you need to... ow, thats for general topic! never mind!
your best bet is to likely drain the oil, change filter and start fresh and go from there. i'd start with 10/30 unless the area you are in is real hot/cold, then adjust for the weather. it'll help to give you a more controled situation and make it easier to spot for leaks if there are any.
as for mrt, i'd suggest staying away from them. from what i understood from the board and general friends, mrt started out great, then their workmanship started hitting a real low. i wouldnt bother to tell you the truth. k/n filters filters pretty good..... and tests have proven that for onroad conditions.... off road is another story, it hasnt been tested/proven. if you want better air intake, just install and snorkel and be done with it.
the widsom here shall make your path a little easier. but beware, more widsom shall cost you next time....

mmmmmm did you say prawn.... oh, sorry, pawn, my mistake...
ok, when the time comes, and i'm sure it will, i'll scout around for some other header options etc...
