After much research I've almost decided that a defender ute is the right vehicle for me

Full size, economical, good diesel (and heaps of room for improvement

), coils all round etc...............
I've read lots about them leaking on peoples feet......... is this really common. Cause I can't stand that (my zook used to do it)
I'd be looking between 1997 and 2000 (budget 15 - 18k) so probably 300tdi and the stronger RB30?? box.................... can you chip these motors or just the td5
thanks guys

LOL Mine leaks like crazy, after a good rain the drivers side footwell is wet but hey with rubber mats who cares...remember its a hose out interior anyway.....
As for performance:No u cant chip a 300tdi but u can easily mod the fuel pump at home in about 10 minutes and with a nice free flowing exhaust they move along nice enough....

thanks mate that's what I assumed about the 300tdi
How much water do you get in anyway

The zook used to actually fill up

I always said it was a bucket
If its just a bit that's ok but a lot would %^(* me

Ok when i say it leaks like crazy i would describe it as damp after every rain and if its been raining real heavy for long period of time i might get a small pool of water..I have never had wet socks
Nothing to worry about at all

that's what I wanted to know cheers

The old problem was bad enough I had to take out the friggin drain plug and rock the car before driving off
I wasn't about to consider a 15k defender if they did that
Anyone elses experience or recommendations re defenders are welcomed. Seems those who own them love them........... thanks again

It is possible to make a defender/county/series leak proof (or at least rain proof). It just takes some time (to trace the leaks) and some silicone/sikaflex.
The main culprits are the vent seals, the windscreen-firewall seal, and the roof joints.
I don't have any leaks in my 110 county. The IIA lets in a small amount, but mainly due to the crappy door seals.

Hey Ben, I've converted the front vents on mine to open (with series bits and pieces). What do you recommend for making these as waterproof as possible. Thanks.

The rover rubber vent seals are too stiff, and as a result often leave gaps. I bought some (fairly soft) waterproof foam (adhesive on one side) from a boating chandlery. This sort of stuff is used as a hatch seal on boats. It worked well for me, the hardest part is making sure water doesn't leak through the join though.

Thanks Ben, did you put the join on the lower side of the rim?, and the tape is OK around the corners?.

It has been 2 years since I saw the IIA (memory not 100%). I think I (foolishly) put the join at the top, and as a result get the occasional drip through. The bottom would be better. If you get the right stuff, it is flexible enough to make the corners. The stuff I got was dark grey and quite soft.
