Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I have the plate cut etc just wanted to know from those that have them how they went about attaching them to the sills. I was thinking about sikaflex or something similar and some pop rivets. I just dont want to be replacing my sills again due to rust (should see what the factory plastics do if you havent already), so if anyone has learnt anything from a previous crack at it let me know.

Don't do it, it will create the same problem as the 'plastic'

Either cut the sills, plate with a piece of heavy wall RHS or plate, or make bars/sliders.

Checkerplate offers nothing but 'bling factor' and opportunity for rust underneath.

I would be doin somthing along these lines Or as stated cut them and infill with shs or rhs .....or 45deg them then run sliders OR this

Wish I seen that before doing all the rust work.

I'll admit its more about 'bling' then functionality

checker plate will catch on stuff and therefore get you stuck or jammed up.
slippery metal works best, and is easier to polish

i never had a problem with my 45% sills catching as i used chequer plate. they were welded to the rest of the tub. will post pics when i can.

Well seeing as I have to cut some rust out of the sills...I like the 45% idea. That is a good idea...plus i can get chequer plate cheap as chips mate

Hook a brutha up I need a little bit of 2.1 to finish off my tray, about 1600 x 250 from memory.

Cutzook are the bottom of those sills where the 45 comes down, is it a sharp point? Seems to me this wouldn't slide real good.

I think if you were going to hack the sill off then you're better off welding in something round, say ~75mm heavy wall pipe. Having said that, i'm sure that if you whack that hard enough, it's still going to bend the panel. Why not just chop the sill off as high up as you can, then put your sliders up higher.

What thickness is that plate that you welded in? how did it go having thicker metal being welded to the thinner stuff?

Not my Rig dude I found this on Pirate4x4 or Zukikrawlers or somewhere ..... but from memory I think it was around 3mm or so


As long as you concentrate the weld heat onto the thicker material it should be ok (just dont weld it to hot as large holes will happen )



I dont think that way will ever surpass the strength of a slider /sidestep setup as your relying on the strength of the surrounding body panels .....but its an alternative

I have 3mm aluminium chequer sills. Sifkaflexed them on, put a shitload on and then gaped all the edges. Put a f load of pop rivets in aswell which probably don't need to be there. I cleaned it all before they went on and rustproofed them, then the chequer went over the top, so I can't really seen any rust getting in behind them.


But you have to realise aswell, no matter what size plate you put on your sills they WILL still bend if hit hard enough. It will start to bend the shit outta your tub rather than the sills. Have seen this happen, Rhett's truck had some big thick ass steel angle on them and he still easily manages to shag his tub.


I reckon if you are jsut going for a bit of blin them the chequer will be sweet, but for decent protection have a think about some sliders.

Just looking at this thread again. One of my sills is kinda stoved in. Not too bad but looks a bit dodgy if I just leave it. I was thinking of fixing it up and plutting on sliders, but I think just cutting the whole sill off and plating it like that pic A1 put up would be easier. I'll thow a pic up here and see what you guys reckon.

Yeh I don't have any sills currently (in a vitara) as they were flat/bent/holey so bad that I had trouble opening the door, and as its road legal the W.O.F (which is a safety inspection we have to do every 6months here in New Zealand) guy took one look at them and sent me away laughing...

So i have cut the remaining outside sill off, and managed to salvage most of the inside sill, and am currently trying to rebuild something on there which looks stock(ish) to the ill-informed (ie the WOF guy) but will provide some protection and be slightly higher up than the old one.

Sounds a bit like what Damo was thinking too...

But am planning on putting sliders on from the chassis longer term...
And I will get it certified/?engineered? one day but will get it done in one go down the track, but just trying to 'let it slide' at the moment...
