if it has only started to play up and you hadn't adjusted the timing, then the timing isn't the problem. anyhow try about 12 degrees advance. have you checked your leads and fuel system?

Timing on a 2F should be 7 degrees B.T.D.C. at idle.
What gap have you set the points to?
I'm assuming the condensor is ok?
Also a good idea to do a compression test.
Mine developed a miss, compression test revealed almost no compression in 3 and 4 due to blown head gasket between the 2 cylinders.

If you are planning on getting your head reconditioned while its off then its a good oportunity to get the hardened valves put in while they are at it so you can run unleaded with out having to add upper cylinder lubricant. I did it to mine, it costs a bit extra but well worth it.

Good luck.

i haven't done it to mine, but it's had a good 200 000 k's on it (in my hands) without issues...

You mean you have run unleaded in it for 200,000Km without upper cyl lubricant?

So you and the others were putting ULP in even while LRP was still available? Assuming because it was cheaper? Well I guess you can just keep doing what you're doing and when the exhast valves burn out then bite the bullet and do it then, or it could be an excuse to do an engine upgrade. I only did mine becuase the head was off getting crack tested and machined.

read the yankee sites. they haven't had lead in petrol since the 70's, yet there 2f's are still going strong. they have none of these "fears" of valve seat recession, exaust valves burning out etc.

on a 400 000k+ 2f, there are things more likely to go. ;)

Interesting......I thought Leaded fuel was banned mid 90s in the US. They were still manufacturing cars after the 70s that were intended to run on leaded, why would this happen if there was no leaded fuel available? But it is interesting that Australia has such a big "Valve Saver Additive" industry based on the theory of VSR while in the US (as you say) its no biggie. Is it all just hype?

With the phasing out of LRP in Australia, The Australian Institute of Petrol (AIP) composed a list of vehicles that were ok to run on ULP. It was put together after consulting with the vehicles manufacturer. Basically if your car isnt on the list then the manufacturer of your engine deemed that it requires an anti-valve seat recession agent. Interestingly enough according to the list FJ40's with 2F engines built after 79 (or 77 if sold in NSW, god knows why) are ok un ULP so I'd say its safe to assume that, according to Toyota, pre 79 (or 77?) 2F engines are not. Mine is a 75, whats yours?

After all this I do agree that on a 400 000k+ 2f VSR would not be an immediate maintenance issue. :D
