Was told once that the centre will fit but the side gears are different and need to be changed to accept 40 axles. However I pulled out a rear axle and tried it in an 80 centre and it fit perfect so I'm leading towards a big fat YES but lets see what other have to say. We are talking full floater rear on the 40 arent we?

as ray said with the full floater and yes it will fit
80 ser are 41x10= 4.1 ratio
40,55 ,60, 75 are 37x9=4.11 ratio

I put a 80 series LSD in the back of my 40 with the 40 crown wheel and pinion and the axels went str8 in, they are the same.

I put a 60 centre in my 80...with 5.29 gears...straight in....
A guy with a 1995 troupy busted his diff at Appin, it was an old 60 diff centre....yes they go straight in...if your 40 was semi floating as in early std diffs, it wouldnt...

as long as they're not factory locker centers, then yes they'll work. your pinion flange might be a different bolt pattern

Nah...to get 5.29, you need a 37 ring and a 7 pinion....which all fits in a 60 housing. Front 80 gears were from the states.

is that a mix of factory bits (the 7 tooth pinion and 37 tooth ring)? or custom made/ aftermarket?

 Crown wheel and pinions are matched sets and the different tooth counts won't mesh

I am putting an ARB locker into a 75 out of an 80. I just need to use the 80 bearings.

thought that, but considering he made special mention of the front being aftermarket, wondered what was going on with the rear
