Might be a stupid question but is a HEI a good upgrade for an 86 EFI rangie or is it only useful if replacing points.

The lucas elctronic dizzy is one of the few lucas things that work properly, hei is better for lpg and more water/moisture tolerant than points.

So it shouldn't hurt to put one in considering I am sourcing LPG parts for it. Will the bigger spark give me any improvement running on petrol or am I better off looking for a good quality coil? - or just leaving it alone.

Biggest improvement will be a fatter spark giving better performance and economy on lpg and will be more waterproof than a normal dizzy.

I think the biggest improvement for LPG is getting the dizzi regraphed to suit. - but then you are stuck running 98+ octane petrol (unless you can work out duel spark graphs)- not a big deal, as once you have gas - you'll never use petrol again.

Your best option - imo - is to go a coil pack setup and aftermarket ecu. I'm doing this and using the ecu to control spark only. have a look in the autoelectrical section here for further info (EDIS). also search here for info on "megasquirt"

If there is enough interest i might put together some pre made, ready to go kits for the rangie V8's.

What are you using for a crank angle sensor? i'm looking at supercharging my windsor i'm building but the dizzy is in the way of a blower snout so need coil packs/ i'm already using a microtech ECU, i haven't done any research yet but just seeing as your doing it??

I,m using a ford EL crank wheel and sensor - cheap as at the wreckers. Check with Microtech that they support the Ford edis modules, if so it'll be very easy to do. The ecu setup is the hard bit. The microtech ECU may drive the coil packs direct or do COP (coil on plug). If this is the case then it should be even easier as the software should be able to recognise any commercially available crank wheels.

Yea i just did a bit of research and the microtech is capable of driving the coil packs on its lonesome, just a software change
