Just wondering if putting driving lights on the roof is illegal in qld?

I believe that they are not allowed to be above 1.2m or 1.4m high

The maximum is also 3 sets of forward facing lights... incl headlights

a pair - must be an even number of lights.

This is for road use. There's some debate (probably in the linked topics ) about whether it's only illegal if you use them on road, or if it's illegal to simply have them mounted.

so let me get this right.....its illegal to have them, but you can have 3 sets of foward facing lights - but they cant be higher than1400 mm off the ground?

If thats the case, where do we mount them?

They're legal. They are there to assist the RACV when the car breaks down at night.

A car manufacturer can get something ADR approved for a specific model... its doesnt mean that it's legal for every car out there though

I inquired at the rta a while ago and was told If I was a tradesman or have another excuse to call them work lights that are not used on rta property and have covers on them when on rta land, they are legal.

I recently read all the legalities on lighting in the ADR guidlines 'bible' which i sourced from an associate of mine who is a higway patrolman,it states that 'HEADLIGHTS' are to be no more than 1.2m from the ground to the centre of the light & lights on the roof are to be no more than 1.8m from the ground & are to be run off an individual switch.Any lighting above this hight is ILLEGAL,covers,seperate switch or even hinged so they can be layed back.....ILLEGAL.And as far as 'tradies' go,any white light other than the reverse lights that face rearwards are all ILLEGAL too. Dunno why I bothered to read it though,myself & nearly the rest of the 4x4 world is breaking these rules ,but it only takes 1 ANAL cop to ruin our day though.

I had my hilux at the pits here in QLD with 4 spotties on the roof and didn't get defected. Did get defected for a stack of other things though. (including one spottie on my bullbar was not working.)

Hi all....i've been studying this fairly in depth, and this is what I have found out:

ADR 13.6 indicates that high beam lights have no height restrictions. This means that if the lights are switched via high beam only, then they can be of any height. They must be white, and face forward, but can be on the roof as the height restrictions dont affect them. Low beam lights have height restrictions.

ADRs only apply to vehicle manufacturers. After market ones are not covered by the ADR, but covered by state road legislation. However most state laws refer back to the ADR for clarification.

The head of the Transport Inspectors (in Tassie) advised me the only concern they have about the roof lights is they may become a dangerous protrusion. If the lights can be folded backwards when not in use, then they can be mounted on the roof, so long as they point forward. A lot of blokes down here are now mounting air rams to fold them down.

Hence the reason I am here. I am after photos etc of the setups that the OBC and Xtreme International trucks use for their light bars....pleeeease
