80 for a comp car why no good?

hey fellas just wondering wehat is so bad about 80,s been ringing round sussing out what sort of lift to go for 38.5,s tyres to fit and ive been told sell it buy a nissan im doing this on a tight budget and have to have it ready by january any tips on strenghening it would be great

Im not sure why u've been told not to run an 80 and buy a patrol, strength wise the two are pretty much on a level playing field and they have pretty much identical suspension setups, there is quite a few 80 comp cars getting about so maybe u should get some info off those guys and see what they have to say.

I would say they are about equal however it is more expensive to buy 80 from straight up. I have seen some comp 80's and patrols and they are as good as each other.

only major issue with an 80 is the front diff for a comp truck
but this can be fixed. search for gq centre into 80 diff, or you can just run an arb locker as this strengthens them up alot
other thing i guess with 80 is they only came a wags and wags are heavier and more suseptable to damage

Nothing wrong with them except there diffs continually shatter. Just put GQ diffs under them like all the other 80 series comp trucks have. They actually look awsome cut down to a ute.

hey lads thanks for replies already got lockers f&r heard bout gu diff option but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ i have talked to bbm about chromoly cvs but in my way of thinking if your cv is stronger it is going to go to the next in line eg axle or diff
like i said i want to run 38.5s i have a 2 inch bodylift already what susp lift will i need to clear 38.5s
the way i c it actually the wallet c it just do it leave standard diff and cvs and c how it gos if i smash diff look at alternatives if i do cvs go chromoly
what do yous think your help is appreciated thanks fellas
one more thing what lift kit eg brand would yous reccommend or a shop i can talk to someone who wont tell me to buy a nissan

hehe nisan biased drivers good to see another 80 on the comp seen.
as for suspension kits have u looked at megalift's 7inch extreme kit prety much replaces everything under car to do with suspension with much stronger gear and 51mm tough dog shocks.
and from what i know a 7i lift and 2 i body u can run 38.5 tyres with minor scrubing. speak to cranky cruiser he has a similar set up.
hope u have enough power to spin them

I run 38.5's on my 80 and they clear and i have 2" bdy and 7" sping.. but they would fit with around 4" spring...

how big is your budget because Dobbin Engineering makes a cross link setup for the front which gives more travel to the front end, im guessing to stop scrubing you could get some offset rims or cut flip and reweld

i was reading bout that dobbin thing dont really get it how it works love to c photo of it on a 80 but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
yes ive decided to go a six inch cranky hows yours feel is it way top heavy or not do you do comps or full on weekend stuff do you drive it on road still

I have actually done a flip arm to my 80 which has made it awesome to drive on road, it prolly is a little top heavy and thats why i said go for 4" spring.. but it does get used on full on weekend stuff and so far shes stayed on all 4 (touches wood),
I do have very big offset rims and the tyres are 14.5" wide so im sure that helps..

I comp an chopped 80 and apart from the usual dramas that everyone experiences I think mine is pretty tough. I used to have front diff dramas, and had blown up a few. If you are planning to run 38's you probably want to consider a diff ratio change. I went to 4.88 centres and ever since then have not had any issues. My weak link now is free wheeling hubs. As I run a lockrite in the front I cant really go to drive flanges. Looking at going cromo hub gears.
There are a few chromo cv's around these days, but In my opinion a decent nitrated or genuine CV is the better option. It is much easier to swap out a busted CV between stages than a diff centre. If you go to the cromo CV's, I think the diff centre will once again become the weak link. I have been running nitrated CV's for 18 months now and have not busted one (damn that probably put the hex on me). have a nice collection of shattered hub gears though.
As a ute, a 4" lift is enough to run 38's (just) with minimal scrubbing. I run 36" TSL's and have no dramas at all at 4" with no body lift. Best mod I ever did was the ute chop. Got rid of a lot of extra weight and transformed the rig.
Another mod worth doing on an 80 for comp is to upgrade all the hub studs to 10mm. As soon as I went to 36"TSL I kept shearing the hub studs.
Sure you could go with a Patrol like the rest and yes they are a proven comp truck, but so can an 80 series if you do the right mods. At the end of the day I guess it is whether you want to be one of the crowd, or do something a little different.

Mine is hte 4.5 tiwn cam petty, the studs are a very good idea.. i have done that also.. i have also done my diff gears to 4.88.. It gives u back ur low range which in an 80 is pretty good from std.
If u are goin 6" lift i would seriously think about doin the flip arm and high steer etc.. cos 80's with a big lift will twist the main shaft in the steering box and sometimes it will snap, and the high steer eliminates this.. also the bolts that hold the steering arm on the passenger side lower swivel hub, they can and will come loose and snap.. and the high steer helps with this too.. i was forever havin probs with the steering box and those bolts and since i did the high steer i have not had a problem.
