Just bought a gq shortie with 300K on the clock. Reguraly service, excellent condition. Just wondering what the best oil would be?
cheers,

This topic has had a lot of coverage from time to time on this and other forums, I believe the conclusion that everyone comes to is that Castrol J-MAX is the best oil for the TD42/TD42-T due to it's high ash content (as opposed to RX Super which is Low Ash), and specific types of detergents used in these oils.
RX Super and JMAX are totally different animals - one is designed for heavy duty US Diesels such as Caterpillar, the other is designed specifically for Japanese diesels.
So the *best* type of oil to use is JMAX (or equivalent), however since it is double the price of RX Super, and is not compatible with petrol engines - I use RX Super or Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40, which means that I can buy a 205 litre drum and change the oil in just about any vehicle - petrol or diesel ...
Makes an awesome difference in petrols - sludge - what's sludge? The high detergent content is like running caustic soda through your engine ... just rebuilt a petrol engine the other day that had been running Delvac it's last 3 changes (failure due to loss of oil pressure through low oil level through worn rings / glazed cyls - not oil type!) - and it was absolutley spotless inside, the oil cleans it out like nothing else!
Certainly have seen no obvious problems using RX Super - I might change my mind if I throw a big end though ... but ... it hasn't happened yet!

this is one of those topics where every1's got an expert opinion, when all oils of the same rating will do the job just as good

Depends, if you want to do the best for it Mobil delvac 1, 5w-40, around $230 for 20L. Next best is Delo 400, 15w-40, around $85 for 20L.
I go the heavy duty diesel oil Delo, nothing else comes close, urban myths aside, esp for the price.
The delo was also the first to obtain the then new global oil rating which OKs it for use in American/Japanese/European diesel engines. That was back in 2000 I think ,will be interesting to see if any other oils are good enough to make the next rating also as the new global rating is due soon. Sorts the oils from oils with science.
cheers

too many hours ( work) and not enough pay.
I guess the biggest thing is to have a good oil and filter changing schedule

Where's the best place to get JMAX, I'm guessing it's not available at your Autobarn/Supercheap/Repco's?

Could be glazed bores due to: Engine running too cool, missed oil changes, wrong type of oil. How many KM's has the engine done? What oil are you using in it now?

a bit over 270k, i use some penrite one. I think that the missed oil changes could be a factor, he said he used to do it every 10k not 5k like myself.... is there anything that i can do from this stage

Short of a rehone & rings? Not really ... no magic additives to fix glazed cylinders or worn rings / bores ....

another question...
someone was telling me that you can get away with an oil change every 5k and a oil and filter change every 10k? (this is for a 4.2 diesel)
i done some work at castrol oil plant the other day and was speaking to the boys who blend, RX super all the way... Jmax is all the crap left over from RX super.

Any diesel oil as long as it meets or exceeds the manufacture's specifications. Have a look at the following site's and see what they recommend
www.shell.com.au,
www.castrol.com.au,
www.valvoline.com.au,
www.fuchs.com.au,
www.mobil.com.au &
www.penrite.com.au
Shell Rimula X is what I use.

personally i wouldn't bother, at about $16 for two filters its pretty cheap insurance, cant see the sense in running clean oil through dirty filters.
FWIW i run rimula x and baldwin filters - td42 change at 5000.
And can't really see that JMAX would be the crap left over from the RX when they have different formulations, i could be wrong though, maybe they put the additives in later, JMAX is also dearer than RX.

thats what i thought to, but all the mixer down there dont rate the oil. They swear by RX super.
