Hello All,

I just want to introduce myself. I have a Suzi 1.L Soft top.

I've just finished fixing up a blown head gasket, put on 2" Lifted Old Man Emu springs and the tyres are now 225s.

I am getting 235 BFG ATs on it in a few weeks.

Things I want to do to my car:

I want Rockhoppers, snorkle, climax drop shackles, Maybe a springover or 2" body lift down the track so you can run 31" tyres.

Possibly swapping in a 5 speed gearboxif it can be done.

Hopefully talk to you all soon

I think you have just about everything coevered heather!

Has it got a sports/roll bar in the back? If it doesnt, you might want to look at putting one in to protect your head..

Do you have an 84 model 1L? If you do, there is a cheaper alternative to getting a Rockhopper which involves using some gears from a 1L xcase and putting them into a post-86 1.3L case.

I would also put some Rocksliders in to protect the door and some lockers, but other than that I think you already know what you want to do. You've got the plan, now make Murray pay for it.

thanks Guys

I also forgot to post I have extractors

How much would a Roll bar be? Cam

And yep it is a 84 model can you give me full details of the cheap way of the rock hoppers Im very interested mm and rock sliders any idea on price?

Cause I will have to pay for it as murray is doing up his Feroza again so Im going to make mine better. Another question does anyone know how many km's you get out of a 1L tank of fuel I just think Im using too much!

Thanks Again

Sif I'm gunna pay for her mods!!! ehehe although..Heather gets my labour for free :)

Nam, you talking about the rocklobster cases? Much difference in gearing in hi/low for those compared to the rockhoppers? Cam, with regards to Maagsters question about fuel, how far do you get on a tank? I'm assuming your model has the same size tank...

Did the extractors make much of a difference?

A rollbar can be made quite cheaply if you know people. Otherwise, I'm sure you could find a ready made or kit type roll bar. If you were going to get someone to make one for you, I wouldn't pay anymore than $400 for a 4 pt bar. Make sure it has at least 4 legs that go down at 90* to the floor and that each leg is supported by a large and thick metal plate at the base. There is no point having a bar that is going to go through the floor.

The Rocklobster case can be made by following these instructions. You do need to get a shop to cut and weld two gears. You should be able to print this out, show it to some 4WD shops and get a quote. Whatever they quote, it's gotta work out cheaper than putting a Rockhopper in.
http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Outback/3 ... bster.html

Rocksliders I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a pair either. Make sure they're sturdy. Not just decorative side steps.

Yeah, make the Sierra better than the Feral!

I wouldn't know about fuel mileage. I've never driven on a full tank on road and my engine's not in good shape at the moment so it doens't give much of an indication.

Dunno about the extractors, they came with the truck. Sounds good tho :) I would say they help, for a 4 speed it certainly go well, not trouble in traffic.

Ohh okay kewl mm well I have a friend who bends metal Boilermaker by trade in Queensland though but i would need some specs the extractors are fine I spose but then again I cannot have enough power compared to my old corolla with a sports exhust on it. I do think the Suzi is lagging a little that is why Im wanting to either replace the engine or put something better in it but i am not sure what woudl be better

My 1L is running on 3 cylinders. It's got MASSIVE power!

My tank holds about 36L now due to a few dents in it, but i get around probly 380-400km on a tank, but i run on optimax only which gives better economy.

My bar was made at opposite lock here in Newcastle for about $450 from memory.

Heather you could leave the Zook standard and it will work better than Murray's Ferwoaza.
Go the spring over and gearing. I hav a complete early model transfer if your interested.

Hey Sam

Thanks anyway for the offer but I dont need one at the moment I have to get a few other little anoying things like fixing the back door on the back its not shutting properly and it rattles grrrrr. So I have to try and get the specs on how to fix it. Murray also going to have a look at it but we both think we are up for a new latch. I need to also get better light cause one of my light is very dim they are the original light and tips on what sort of obes to put in?

Maagster, save your money and when you come up to qld you can buy mine  :D when you guys get up here get one of the outerlimits boys to give me a call ond you can have a test drive. It should be just a bout what you are looking for?? aircon power steer and enough rubber on those 35" boggers to drive right over the top of the feroza
If you are keen to wheel we are always interested....

Hmm....if the price was around the $500 mark we might think about it 8)

Only a few more little things to fix up with Heathers, 1 headlight, rear door, front axle seal and new shocks. Then she's ready to start hitting the dirt...and modifying more  Seen photos of your beast Mad, and I could see Heather behind the wheel of that...gives me nightmares! Hope to catch up with you when we are up in Jan, will be calling Ruff to organise a run somewhere.

Hehe Thanks but Ive just brought by suzi not so long ago so all my money has gone into it at the moment. But later I might up grade depending how this project goes. I am wanting a 5 speed gear box but I dont know if I could put it in it later I would like to put another engine in but not sure what it would take. Soo ahhh dont know what to do to many choices. But if that 4wd of yours is in QLD registraion its a cow to get transferred to NSW. My uncle did it and was really bad with the things he had to go though with it. MMM unless Murray and me move back to Queensland hehe

Thanks anyway I would luv to

Hey heather it would probly be a better idea to wait on the grearbox if u r going to put another engine in....that way u can mate the new engine and gearbox a bit easier..

Posted: Mon Dec 23, 2002 2:32 pm
by maagster
Yep thanks Cam hey is it possible to do that? What engines could fit into my 1 L also what so you have and what did you do to yours cause I thinking its maybe not running the best it could and am not sure why?

There are heaps of engine swaps....
1.3 sierra
1.6 vitara, 8 valve, 16 valve
1.3 GTi twin cam
4K corolla - Nam got a price for it and gearbox $500?
4AGZE? etc etc etc...

depends how much money u wanna send i spose. I dont think it would be worth spending money getting a 5 spd box mated to a 1L motor because you will hardly ever use 5th gear unless u r going down a hill..
If the 1 litre donk is tuned properly it should hoot along fairly well. Just try a simple tune up
-New plugs
-Points (0.3-0.4mm gap)
-Condensor
-Timing (11 deg BTDC) or u can advance it a little bit..i do
-Adjust the idle if its out (about 850-900 rpm)
-Give it a spray of Nulon carby cleaner....that usually gets mine running nicely
-If its running crap coz of the carby pick up a kit from an auto shop for about $50 -60 and run that through it.....im pretty sure murray could cope doing that :?:

Try that first and see if it helps.....i find with mine if the timing is out, points are closed or carby is clogged it is usually why it runs like a bag of poop.

AHH and when are you going to be coming down this way next hehe hint hint lol we just did the head on it and replaced plugs and so forth I will try those things though. Also I dont know why or how it is doing it but I noticed while sitting at a intersection idleing there was no smoke blowing then all off a sudden I see a big puff of smoke and I havent even accelerated. Any ideas? And its fumey inside when driving it I know it is a soft top and all but still didnt think it would be real fumey.

Yeah, might have to do a bit of carby cleaning, after the head went it's the one thing we haven't looked at. It has all new plugs n cables, but seems to be going through a hell of a lot of fuel. Need to do an oil change again on it too..just need the time :|

Timing is spot on, points are spot on as well, highly suspect the carby, what do I do to clean it?

Posted: Mon Dec 23, 2002 3:02 pm
by camskizook
Best bet is to run a kit through it and clean everything out with compressed air. I had to get a mate to show mw how to do it the first time because there a heaps of little bits and pieces in it, and when you are finished there are still parts left over making u think "where the hell does that go???" Apart from that, try spraying the Nulon carby cleaner in the air intake. Its good stuff.

Cam, just ran some of that carbie cleaner through the lil beast, also did an oil change and retorqued the head bolts (3rd and final time yay!).

Took it for a drive, a lot less smoke and a lot smoother, still needs more of a clean I think but it's a good start. Heather managed to get some real nice wheel spin happening on one of the corners...having too much fun in this rain I think hehe

Now if only they made that stuff for an efi engine !
