Hilux; IFS conversion to coil sprung

I was just wondering if anyone has or knows anything about engineering a 99 DC lux from ifs to coil front end?

I want to increase my articulation and stretch but also want to retain my hilux diff.

1. Is this possible
2. How much
3. Who does it

buy a gq and toss the body, put the hilux body onto the gq. done.

it has been done, more so on 4runners/surf's than hilux's afaik.
call the big guys lik ORI cheesy and Mannel they have done em and can give you a rough costing guide

So you want to retain the original rear diff??

It should be straight forward to swap a solid hilux axel into it...

Entirely possible.
Not much change of out $5k if you get a workshop to do it, probably around $3k if u do it yourself.
- you need to consider 2nd hand diff ~ $500+
- overhaul said diff ~$250+
- materials for control arms, spring mounts, shock mounts, chassis plating.
- steering arms - ~$500
- welding/cutting incidenaries $50.
- beer/rum $150.
- engineers - depends on whats done, min is probably bout $300.
Try Superior Engineering, or speak nicely to Bubs or haultech offroad.

I am actually about to do a SFA in a 99 single cab, still in talks with the engineers about it. It looks like it will be easier engineering wise to do a chassis swap cause I want to run leafs up front. I have seen a 4th gen x-cab on a earlier solid axle frame in a carpark on the north side late last year so it has been done dont know if it was engineered though.

gee thats a cheap and easy alternative

if you want to do it yourself go over to pirate and have a look in the toyota section plenty of guys doing sas's some with coiled fronts, there is even an aussie bloke doing a coil sas with a bundy front end (hales something or other from this board).

He didnt say anything about going SAS!!

I also have been looking at the coil over conversions that they have in the states. I am not familiar with anyone here doing them but there are a number of places willing to have a look, work something out and then give a quote - if you import the kit.

I do not know if you need an engineers cert on it as you are staying with the IFS.

The kits involve replacing your wishbones, upgrading the shockie mounts, etc.

I was really interested as I thought might get away with about 2 - 3 k (guesstimate tho) but have changed my mind after snapping my axle. Will wait for SAS to strenthen the driveline.

The coil over IFS increases travel, etc, but you still need to rely on CV joints and a 7.5" diff.

Will post my link to the kits in the states this evening when I get home - is on my home pc.

Hey mate. Yes he did.

From IFS to Coil front end. If he just put coilovers in the front it would still be IFS

Either you've got it wrong or the guy has miss worded what he wants.

what i meant was that i would like to keep both of my diffs if possible and basically switch the torsion bar front end to coil sprung.

?????????????????????????????????

And the only way to keep your front IFS diff and go coil front is to do a coil over suspension upgrade.

Nanananana

CB was right!

Okay, over it now. See my earlier post. I have mislaid the link to the kits bu Google will help - I may be able to post it up later tonight

It is very possible to replace the whole lot with a coil front diff rather than waste money on the next best thing. There are two hiluxs that race in comps in Qld that have coil front diffs. There are about three local trucks around here Caboolture that have chopped out the IFS and replaced with Bundera coil front diffs with engineers certificates. Get in contact with Sean Calcino and he might be able to steer you in the right direction.

I think these are the kits you're talking about.

Here's a review of the kit.

Only catch would be the cost and the track increase, SAS would be cheaper, not sure who does them though (ORI are closed now).

Oh, so you wanna keep the IFS, just use coils instead....You just worded it wrong

Would it be all that beneficial? Comparing to a SAS anyways

As I understand it, cost might be comparable

Coil sprung IFS = increased travel (unsure of comparison to SAS tho), more comfortable than SAS, possibly cheaper?

SAS = Probably more travel, less comfortable, stronger drive train (at least go from 7.5" diff to 8" diff and goodbye CV joints) but IO think more expensive?
