MQ RD28 Auto Conversion Query

Hi everyone. Please be gentle as this is my first post.

I have just bought an MQ L28 4speed, and was just wondering whether it would be possible (read: feasible) to put an RD28 diesel in. The motor I have access to has an auto box currently, but I wouldn't really care if I had to use my 4 speed with it. Has anyone done this swap before? Am I losing my mind?? Do I need a 350 chev?? Who can say.

Either way, I feel the need to bin the L28, and if i cant go diesel, I might go with a V8 but I don't know if I can afford the fuel and rego. Which leads me to my next question, does anyone know if the RD28 is any good?? (Fuel economy, torque etc.)

Thanks for any help you can give, as I am new to the Nissan scene, and am keen to get a good, reliable Toyota recovery vehicle happening soon.

by not not
If you MQ is a shorty then i think it would go alright but the RD28T which is i presume what you mean is not the most power house of deisels.
They tend to have alot of turbo lag and do not like towing much at all
Once up to road speed they do go pretty well. And in the hands of the right tuner they can go a little better.
You might find the 4 speed might bolt up as i was told a while ago that the RD2.8t is derived from the old L series 6 cylinders And my old 2.8 deisel gq had a clutch in it from a skyline.
But if you go ahead i would be changing the head gasket before putting the motor in as they have a tendancy to let go. But they are a really easy engine to work on.
Cheers Jamie

I actually have a LWB and it is a non turbo RD28. Perhaps not a great idea then?? Thanks for the input Jamie.

how heavy is the mq short wheel base, the rd 2.8 isn't a that bad engine, but its just in a truck that is to big for it!. u do have to rev it to get some excitement out of it, its not the ideal tow motor
ive had mine for for nearly 230.00 odd kms in my GU & never had a problem with it, i get 11 kms on the hwy & 12/13 around thwn, the GU weights in over 2300kg so the u would think the mq would be some what lighter? so there for the motor may be better suited? :?:
