80 Series Overheating ?

In the past couple of months I've had the cruiser (96 1HZ with bolt on toyota turbo) heat up on me. Both times I was
towing the boat (Approx 1 Ton) and doing around 115-120km/h @ 3000Rpm. As far as strain on the engine, there
didn't seem to be much and it has plenty more power in reserve. The first time this happened I pulled over and she
bubbled away for a bit, and the second time i backed off and kept cruising and the temp returned to normal. I was thinking
its probably just the thermostat gone, but could there be anything else causing this?
Cheers!

try wasing your radiator out and maybe even your aircon radiator could be chocked full of mud... if that dont work and u have replace your thermostate then u might have 2 pull your radiator out and take it 2 a radiator fella and get it pulled apart and flushed out.....

had this happen when my 75x had the 1hz and aftermarket turbo, i 1st put two tubes of the silicone fluid from toyota into the fan, this helped a bit, but still overheated so i put it on the dyno and ended up winding the boost down to about 9 psi and that seemed to fix it. ended up packing it in later so i replaced it with a factory turbo

Redo the fluid in the fan hub.
My whole cooling system was replaced and about a month later started overheating, redid the clutch fluid and all was good. There is a tech thread on how to do this on the board.

this may have been over looked my 80 was doing this and it turned out to be a cracked seal in the radiator cap.

mums 1HDT used to get hot at 110km/h+ with air-con on and with air-con off it would get hot at 120km/h, took it to the radiator place and it turned out the radiator was bloked so had it all flushed etc etc and havnt had any problems with it since.

Had a quick look and the radiator looks physically ok, but haven't had the time to be pulling it out just yet.
Might get a look at it next weekend. Was thinking I would change the thermostat in the mean time as
I have no idea if its ever been changed? Hopefully this will be the quick fix im looking for...
Any other suggestions welcome
Cheers!

I'd reckon as mentioned above its the fluid coupling on the fan, common problem with the 80 series, about $8 from toyota a tube. Regards Steve M

I was reading another post of yours Moonman, and you commented that your 80 got somewhere in the vicinity of 16L/100km. If this is the case, I would be guessing that you are overfuelling the 1HZ. If you are overfuelling, this will explain why your cruiser is overheating on a highway run.
In diesels, too much fuel = excessive heat and bad fuel economy,
too little amount of fuel = poor performance
