Hi guys...just having a think what maybe involved with bolting up rear 80 disc brakes to the rear of a 60 to replace drum brakes.

Has anyone done this...is it easy and straight forward...what is actually needed to complete the conversion.

Any help and or ideas, suggestions would be great.

Cheers...

You need an 80 rear axle assembly.
I've got GQ discs and subaru calipers.

if the tailshaft bolt pattern is the same id say get the whole diff assembly from the 80 weld the spring perches onto it off the 60 diff and bolt the whole lot up, would assume it would not be very hard if you can use a welder

I thought it may be as easy as changing the hubs and backing plates and stuff but if its too hard ill leave the drums in, they work well but just a pain for maint thats all

If it was that easy then every 40 and 60 getting around would be a disky one by now :)

If you put an 80 rear axle assembly in then its wider and ya wheels will hang out the gaurds.

The reason that you cant do this swap is because the backing plate bolt patern is different. If it wasnt for this problem it would be an easy swap.

Looks good. Ok for a 40 with hand brake on the transmission. You would need to work out a way to get a handbrake to work with the 60.

Hence my GQ disc's with sooby calipers. L series sooby have h/brake working on front calipers so the lever pulls inwards, just like your drum set up.

Oh that, I read it wrong. I have already done that. I thought you were refering to a way to do the brakes so you can put the 80 hubs on the rear of th 40 or 70 housing.

There are a heap of threads on this. There are several problems involved which are difficult to overcome which is why no-one has released a bolt on kit.

A smiple search will see you to a thread which contains a shitload of technical information which basically means for the conversion to be legel you need to match the rear calipers (piston capacities) to the master cylinder.

I think you need to use a 80 series master as the 60series designed for drums opushes too much volume to the rear, and then upgrade your front calipers to the larger 4runner V6 calipers aswell (to match the 80 series master).

there is no "easy" swap over.

Yep... because they were free:)
But apart from that, They fit straight over the wheel studs just like the drum does.

Fair nuf.
Sooo...from there its just a matter of centralising the caliper and welding the bracket to the axle... ;)

except the hole in the middle of a patrol disc is the incorrect size for the toyota hub and no engineer will ever pass it.

i think the hole in the GQ disc is about 3mm bigger than the hub
